You know, the darndest thing is that Stalin could have said the same thing in Moscow - the German Army was already in the suburbs of Moscow and the artillery could be clearly heard in the city.

I don’t know where this “measured reponse” thing comes from. I honestly believe that it actually increases misery and casualties over time. Overwhelming, gross, and indiscriminate reprisals so horrible that people in the area will talk about it quietly 250 years from now really does work. Ask the Germans about the Rooskies. I think that the Germans would have to think very carefully about expanding eastward again. In case the history books are rewritten and memories fail, supposedly the Russians have the bones of 50,000+ German soldiers that they picked up during and after the war stored in a warehouse in St. Petersburg to drop from planes as a “greeting” for the Germans.

Well if Mr. H would have kept to his general’s plans they would have - but by the time the Germans almost got to Moscow they were tired, equipment worn, supply lines stretched thin and being attacked by partisans and winter with no warm clothing.
