For Bevin, observers say advertising and messaging key to unofficial GOP nomination

... “Who was the best communicator, who was the most dynamic, who was the best on camera, and who was best during debates? It was Matt Bevin,” said Republican consultant Ted Jackson, who backed Comer in the GOP primary.

...

Scott Jennings, who directed pro-McConnell groups last year, said super PACs never “laid a glove” on the unofficial nominee in this year’s primary compared to last year, when Bevin “got hit much harder.”

“I actually don’t think he was hit that hard in the primary,” Jennings said. “My view is Comer and Heiner hit each other pretty hard, but I don’t actually think anybody really ever laid a glove on Matt Bevin, and I think that’s why he was able to essentially go around the other two front runners.”

Jennings called Bevin’s direct-mail pieces “fantastic” and said he produced arguably the most memorable television ad of the 2015 primary when he cast Comer and Heiner in a faux food fight.

Grayson Smith, a former Comer and U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers aide who supported Heiner, said Bevin appeared more confident on the campaign trail — “There’s no greater tool than experience,” he noted — and built a following on the Lincoln Day Dinner circuit.

And, like Jackson, Smith said the contention between Comer, who faced accusations of abusing a college girlfriend and escorting her to an abortion clinic, and Heiner, whose running mate’s husband communicated with a blogger pushing the allegations, provided an opening for Bevin.

Undecided voters “really broke toward Bevin,” Smith said, noting he’s never seen “a more improved, polished candidate from basically 365 days apart.”

I could not agree more.

No. His main primary opponent, Comer, is Mitch's GOPe man.

Proof positive that much of what is stated here about the "GOPe" is just made up and dilutes from actual discussion about outrageous activity on the part of the GOPe.

No, although all of these guys singing his high praises in this article certainly are. Bevin is who ran the embarrassingly horrible campaign against McConnell in last year’s primary, but this time around was a completely different candidate.

This race is a poster child for run-off elections. No one should win a race with 33%+90 votes.

A run-off requirement would have prevented President Clinton. Ross Perot made Clinton the president. Clinton 43%, Bush 38%, Perot 19%

Recount can’t take place until Mitch finishes Senate business and comes back home to supervise it.

I agree with respect to a primary (although if Bevin and Comer went to a runoff, Bevin would still win — Heiner despises Comer and would’ve used his resources to help Bevin).

As for a run-off where the Presidency is concerned, it likely would not have changed the outcome in 1992. Perot hated Bush, Sr. and in a runoff between GHW Bush and Bubba, it was almost certain Bubba would’ve won. Not having the brilliant strategist Lee Atwater, nevermind his broken campaign promise on taxes harmed Bush, Sr. immeasurably.

Add to that, in 2000, a runoff would’ve had the Nader voters go to Gore, so that would’ve been another fiasco.

This article is another reason why I think Bevin has an excellent shot in November.

That’s certainly good to hear. Bevin was terrible in 2014, and this November’s general election against Conway will be challenging.

There was a requirement for a 40% threshold to avoid a runoff that the legislature eliminated several years ago. although if Bevin and Comer went to a runoff, Bevin would still win — Heiner despises Comer and would’ve used his resources to help Bevin

Comer and Heiner indeed despised each other personally - it would have been much, much more difficult to bring those opposing camps together following a primary with either of them as the victor - with Bevin that kind of animosity was never formed between either camp.

May 28th - the recanvass, which is just a retabulation from the county clerks who will report the numbers back in to the SOS the same way they did on election night to confirm the numbers. it is not a full recount. That would be a much longer process that the campaign requesting it would have to pay for.

He better be improved.

I’d say I hope Comer wins a recount but I then we’d have to deal with whining along the lines of “McConnell GOPE vote fraud, I’m voting for Conway, that will show them!!!!”.

Too bad KY has no runoffs.

I don’t think KY or TN have ever had runoffs, but they have them in OK.
