Grand Junction Police offers found one person deceased at the scene of a multi-car crash that was reported around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday night. They began searching for the suspect who had fled with the weapon. Near 10th st. and Gunnison Ave, a carjacking occurred, following thereafter by an officer-involved shooting. The suspect at the scene later died of his injuries. There are no outstanding suspects and no additional safety concerns at this time.

(9:00 PM UPDATE) The Grand Junction Police Department has released the following information about what happened...

The 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating an officer involved shooting in the area of N. 10th Street and Hill Avenue in Grand Junction. It is standard procedure to activate the CIRT in officer involved shootings. Early information indicates this shooting followed two other incidents involving a man with a gun, both in the County and in downtown Grand Junction.

Due to the nature of this incident, we hope to hold a media briefing sometime later this evening.

The Critical Incident Response Team is comprised of the following agencies: Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Fruita Police Department, Palisade Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation. It is generally activated when a law enforcement agency is involved in a critical incident to ensure a complete and accurate investigation.

Yes sir! This line is what intrigued me most:

Due to the nature of this incident, we hope to hold a media briefing sometime later this evening.

Told my wife we were going to watch this very closely, considering the fact that it happened just a couple miles from us.

Grand Junction must have an excellent shooting range for training their officers.

The local PD generally doesn't hold news conferences. Ultimately, I'm curious as to whether Al Notso-Sharpton is going to be taking an interest. Might totally off base on that, but from what I've seen so far, it may be a possibility, and I'm wondering if that is why they will be holding a news conference. Quite the story, anyhow, with all the different elements.

Grand Junction must have an excellent shooting range for training their officers.

In the last few years, they completed one heckuva training facility just outside town. Driving course, range, mockup village to practice subduing the populace, you know, all that cool stuff.

There was a bicyclist shot in Weld county and the FBI is investigating. Strange.

Yeah, that one's a little weird too. I've been following it - seems that there are rumors the shooter is being called a 'serial shooter' - he doesn't seem to be targeting anyone specific - just random people, or that's what it sounds like from media reports, and we all know how reliable those are. In any event, this is actually the 2nd shooting in the area. The first was a woman in her car who was hit in the neck but was able to pull over and contact 911. Still, no evidence released as of yet that would quite seem to warrant FBI involvement, so it is kinda weird they are involved.

The latest update on this, via KJCT8 (GJPD says 17-year-old man killed in officer-involved shooting after fighting with father)

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Grand Junction Police Chief John Camper identified the suspect shot and killed by officers on Tuesday night as a 17-year-old man fleeing a fight with his father on the Redlands.

Chief Camper addressed the media at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and laid out what their preliminary investigation has revealed.

The story begins around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday night.

According to Chief Camper, a 17-year-old man was fighting with his father at their home on the Redlands when he fled in a silver pickup truck, believed to be his father's.

The 17-year-old left the home with what Chief Camper described as a long gun and a bag of ammunition. It is unknown at this time if he had a previous criminal history.

He proceeded to travel down Broadway towards downtown Grand Junction at a high rate of speed. At the intersection of 7th Street and Grand Avenue he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a man riding a motorcycle.

Pending the Mesa County Coroner's report, Chief Camper said they believe the victim was killed during the collision with the suspect.

KJCT News 8 has obtained the identity of the victim killed while riding a motorcycle, but we have chosen not to release his name pending the Coroner's report.

Witnesses say the 17-year-old then exited the vehicle and fired the long gun at least one time, striking a nearby vehicle.

From there the suspect walked to the area between Gunnison Avenue and Hill Avenue on 10th Street, near Washington Park.

At approximately 5:55 p.m. he approached a SUV with a mother and two children sitting inside. Witnesses state the woman saw the man coming and attempted to start her SUV and leave, however the young man forcibly ordered her to get out of the vehicle.

Shortly thereafter officers engaged the subject, and an unidentified officer shot the suspect.

The 17-year-old was treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital, where he later died.

At this time there is no search for other suspects, and they believe everyone involved in the incident has been accounted for.

The officer that shot the suspect is currently on administrative leave, and Chief Camper says he's a 17 year veteran of the GJPD with even more experience at other agencies.

Still no names or photos being released.
