Used to be that it took half of the energy to compress and liquify natural gas. New equipment is much more efficient and make liquid natural gas feasible.

Used to be that it took half of the energy to compress and liquify natural gas. LNG is not made by compressing natural gas. The critical temperature for methane is too low. It must be cooled to -260°F.
I don't ever remember a process that took half the energy. However, it is a significant amount. Typical LNG plants burn about 10-12% of the feed to drive the process.
