Few political spouses in recent memory have been as wary of the spotlight as Columba Bush, Jeb's wife of 41 years. But her husband's presidential potential means the spotlight is about to find her.
Now and then in an otherwise unmemorable speech, Jeb Bush will drop a mention of his wife, like a sudden pop of color. At an event in Nevada this March, one of his first speeches of this campaign season, before a crowd of what The Washington Post called everyday Americans, Bush opened with a husband-still-in-thrall routine. His life, he said, can be divided into two parts: b.c. and a.c.before Columba and after Columba, referring to Columba Garnica de Gallo, the woman he fell madly in love with while on a high-school trip to Mexico and then married 41 years ago.

The role of political spouse always entails sacrifice, but Columbas case has been extreme. Jebs time in office coincided with stretches when Columba was reportedly unhappy, because of his absence or because of troubles with one of their three children or because she herself had landed in the news in ways that mortified her. It was during Jeb Bushs governing years that Columba let it slip to the press how her husbands career had damaged their children, and that she reportedly told Jeb he had ruined her life. During his governorship, which ran from 1999 to 2007, she often retreated to Miami while he was living in Tallahassee.

“...bet she likes the moolah”
She does, but she doesn’t like paying duty on it.

You just couldn’t make this crap up, it keeps going on and on, its endless.
Lots of tidbits in that article to make any conservative run from Jeb’s campaigning.
A nightmare family.
I've never heard Jeb Bush's wife speak but I suspect she doesn't speak or understand English very well.
Did you read it? I don’t 5th ink that comment is justified in any way.
Expanding the first lady ethnicity maybe in the cards again
this time around.

Columbia s/b Columba
And she supposedly wrote this newspaper op-ed today:
B.S.
I continue to be astounded and amazed that the GOP establishment is so out of touch with their base that they actually think anyone would ever vote for Jeb Bush.
Really - it’s illustrative of their mindset that they think they can just shove him down our throats.

Yes, I read the lefty article, from The Atlantic.
We’ll have to agree to disagree.
Whenever I think of Columbo Bush, I think of this....
...In 1999, shortly after Jeb won the gubernatorial election, she faced public scrutiny. Returning to the U.S. from a trip to Paris, Columba told customs officials that shed spent $500 on overseas purchases. She was searched, however, and officials found receipts for $19,000 in clothes and jewelry. A Bush spokesman at the time said she did not want her husband to know how much she had spent.
Rules/laws? They’re for the peons! (She was given several chances to restate her Paris purchases, to Customs, once the actual receipts were found. She proceeded with her fib....and, subsequently, had to pay a hefty fine.) A pretty brazen act, for one who is reportedly so private, no?
She takes out loans to buy expensive jewelry too (at full retail, no doubt). She sounds like a spendthrift. Why not wait until you can pay cash and avoid the UCC financing statement filings (a public record) and the interest payments?
Well, when you are in it for the bling and NOT the love of the candidate or country, why not buy while the buying is good? Never heard her on the campaign trail.... She better be as good as Bill Clinton or it’s toast. Betcha she makes Ann Romney look like Mother Teresa....
[and that she reportedly told Jeb he had ruined her life]
Great, just what we need for a President.
