Gov. Brian Sandovalsigned a bill Wednesday that would make it easier for immigrants with temporary legal status to get a Nevada teaching license, saying it would help meet the needs of a "new Nevada."
Among the people who flanked the Republican governor as he signed AB27 was Uriel Garcia, a 22-year-old Nevada State College student and recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program who was previously denied a license. He said he plans to re-apply as soon as possible to get started on his student teaching and move toward his goal of teaching 2nd grade English language learners.
"I want to give back to the community that gave me so much," Garcia said.
The old law allowed the state superintendent to give a teaching license to someone who is not a citizen but has a work permit only if there's a teacher shortage for a subject the person can teach. The new law, which passed the Senate and Assembly unanimously, allows those immigrants to get a teaching license if a district has a teacher shortage of any kind.

Clark County School District in Las Vegas seeks to hire more than two thousand teachers for the 2015-2016 school year. They are very desperate. Much turnover especially in schools with little discipline.

Well if the situation is the same as when my son got his teaching credentials, a lot of his fellow students had a very difficult time getting jobs because the older teachers wouldn't retire. So if that has remained the same it's just another slap at legal immigrants and Americans!

This is because they drove out many of the tenured teachers they had who were U.S. Citizens, going after them. Obama Reforming education. Common Core. Go after and get rid of already tenured teachers. Write them up on BS. Give new people jobs. They changed all the rules in Obama’s second term. Started having witch hunts called investigatory interviews that they had never had before which allowed principals to go after tenured teacher on complete BS.
Cause the principals didn’t control the students and ran off the teachers they had. They had a teacher surplus after the 2010-2011 school year.
Yes it can. My students made AYP, meeting standards and I was driven out. Have two degrees and am a US citizen and was a tenured teacher there.
They went after tenured teachers and got rid of good teachers. They play games. All whether the principal likes the teacher or not. Not based on how the teacher does or teaches.
They go after a lot of teachers in their fifth year of teaching or used to because they vested in the pension plan after completing their fifth year. Hence the shortage. Treat the teachers horrible and people don’t want to teach there and leave.
I can see why they need help, the salary scales are pretty low. They probably pay janitors, garbage truck haulers better than teachers.
Wake up, you get what you pay for. Dump the Unions and start private schools that hire and admire teachers by giving them the equivalent of what high tech silicon valley employees make. If they are private and paid well they won’t have suck Union Boss’s ass or for that matter Obama, Clinton, NEA, and CTA or any other twisted union.
It is even worse than that. They want to change everything to take your job away and give it to an illegal.
