I always wondered how a third of earth’s population was destroyed in the Book of Revelation. It seemed like an unusually large number to me. Guess it is all starting to make sense to me now. God Bless America.

It seemed like an unusually large number to me.
The Bible was written by Middle-Easterners for MEers, so a third of the ME destroyed would be enough to check them for another century... at best, what with their emigration progress recently.
The key is to insure Israel escapes the devastation.

People get stuck and confused when they apply too much literalism to Revelation. The Revelation needs to be read through allegorical eyes, with many of its events occurring in parallel, and with literal events (e.g. the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D.) casting far deeper, larger, and broader shadows both in time and in the spiritual world.
The Thousand Year Reign is now, the time between Christ's ascension and his return.

Here’s one clue from elsewhere (this is when He Returns at Armageddon):
Zechariah 14:12 King James Version (KJV)
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
Sounds like nuclear combat - though He won’t need nuclear weapons.
