From what I understand, the Amtrak 188 is of the GE Genesis P32A-DM. It is one that is designed with low profile that enables it to go under tunnels with lower heights. Here is a photo of the locomotive's cab. The engineer sits on the right side because most signs and signals are on that side of the track.

With those large throttle controls, it would be difficult for someone to mistakenly put the throttle in the wrong position. However, how many of us have dosed off on the keyboard and woke up to pages of "z's" in the document. I think Bostian similarly dosed off and leaned forward on the controls. He woke up to his assistant conductor yelling at him to "Wake up!" The only thing he has left was to apply the brakes.

Where is that assistant conductor? There are two seats in that control cab.

The locomotive is a Siemens "Cities Sprinter". Indeed, the engineer sits or stands on the right.

(The controls DO look a little like Mr. Garrison's "IT"!)

The Amtrak Cities Sprinter, or ACS-64, is an electric locomotive designed by Siemens Mobility for Amtrak. The locomotives are to operate on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) and the Keystone Corridor, replacing the railroad's existing fleet of AEM-7 and HHP-8 locomotives. The first ACS-64 entered service in February 2014; deliveries will last until 2015.

(High performance German locomotive. As with a Mercedes or BMW ... you probably think you're driving 55 but look down and it's actually 105.)
