A US appeals court has ruled that the NSA's dragnet of millions of Americans' phone calls is illegal, and Edward Snowden served as the catalyst for the decision.

"Americans first learned about the telephone metadata program that appellants now challenge on June 5, 2013, when the British newspaper The Guardian published a FISC order leaked by former government contractor Edward Snowden," the court noted.

“Snowden is a mixed bag. He’s done some good, but I find him fleeing to Russia, of all places, questionable. And I bet you dollars to donuts that Snowden is some type of leftist or libertarian — certainly not one of us.”

Apart from whatever is revealed in the future, I’m thankful Snowden made the world aware of just how bad it had gotten.

As for Russia, I’m not sure. Where else - than Russia or China - could he go and be out of reach...?

Seems to me you can get the message out in a better manner than he did. I’m not a big fan of his.

Some of the stuff he dumped wasn’t a big favor to our nation, even if you don’t back the NSA doing what it has been.

Does any of us back the NSA on what they were doing?

It’s one thing to target suspected terrorists. It’s another to target normal citizens. So to hell with the NSA on that count.

Now back to him.

I’m not buying the idea he was a white knight.

I don’t think he had some massively great sense of great justice. He is a lib afterall. But what he did was ultimately right. Because the NSA is ultimately violating the Constitution. Thats the bottom line. Imagine how much further along they would be into our lives had he not.

I don’t condone what Snowden did. In fact I’m still willing to consider the over/under on his being Putin’s b!tch.

I don’t have a problem with him revealing infractions in the United States. I will say that the terrorists among us may have benefited in certain ways from that. When he starts naming agents in the field and damaging our information gathering over seas, it’s clear that his motive weren’t pristine. Now when the NSA claims he was a double agent, I think they are trying to tarnish him. Frankly I’m not convinced there isn’t something to that though.

He didn’t do himself any favors with me by some of his activity.

The CIA, NSA, FBI, and other groups need to get warrants and stay within due process guidelines, unless there is an imminent terrorist threat. This isn’t about thinking the NSA has acted properly at all. They haven’t.

Heads should roll too.

If he is then Putin cut his own throat. I fail to see the benefit of having 300,000,000 people and the rest of the telephone and internet using world acutely aware they live in a George Orwell novel if you want to keep spying on them transparently.

Do you fail to see the futility of trying to keep it a secret?

Indeed they should. -Maybe- even his for the ancillary stuff. But the man perhaps set back the march of fascism by a huge amount. And there’s something to be said for that.

And in truth, ALL the punishment should be on the politicians that caused any deaths from this. Because they are ultimately the cause and the problem.

Worked for years. Whats the benefit to a KGB guy destroying his intel network when he’s trying to gather intel?

I don't know how anyone could define what government did as an infraction. I don't think the government defecating on our Constitution qualifies as an infraction.

I will say that the terrorists among us may have benefited in certain ways from that.

Begs the question, who exactly is rolling out the red carpet for terrorist to be amongst us?

His intel network? Is that what the NSA is? Is that what you laud Snowden for exposing?

Think about it. If Snowdwen is a russian agent wouldn’t Putin want him in the NSA feeding intel to Russia?

That’s what an inttel network IS.

Good grief, there he goes again....

I've never been on a Snowden thread, but acting like he is some kind of right wing hero, as if he did something great, other than be a broken clock a couple of times......

Typical Norm, so unbelievably Moby......or stupid......take your pick....

And like those that want it reupped every time.

Same people. Every issue, every time.

Same group on FR backing those people. Every issue, every time.

Sort of a pattern.
