North Carolina Mom, 25, Leaves Three Children Behind To fight For Kurds In Iraq

A mother-of-three from North Carolina is the latest Westerner to volunteer to fight against ISIS in Iraq. Samantha Johnston, 25, from Emerald Island, who previously served in the US Army, is believed to have joined the Kurdish Peshmerga troops, who are battling ISIS in northern Iraq and Syria. She said she wanted to fight ISIS because: 'I decided to come fight because I felt like it was my duty.

'I couldn't look my children in the eyes and say, "I didn't do anything to help."' Ms Johnston told the site her children are in 'a safe place'. 'To me this has nothing to do with religion,' said Jay. 'I am a Christian but I'm protecting humanity. No matter race or religion.'

She told the website that she joined the Kurdish fighters by seeking them out. She claims she made 'the right connections and verified they were reliable'. Ms Johnston says she plans to start a humanitarian organization after her return so she can continue helping the Kurdish community.

She regularly updates her Facebook page with pictures of her in Iraq. On April 25 she posted a selfie showing her with the Kurdish flag and a Kalashnikov firearm.

On May 9 she posted a picture of a badge she has pinned to her jacket with the word 'Mom' emblazoned on it. There are estimated to be around 100 westerners fighting alongside Kurdish militias against ISIS, which has recruited thousands of foreign fighters into its ranks. Ms Johnston said she began researching Kurdistan after ISIS swept through parts of Iraq and Syria last year, claiming territory and terrorizing religious and ethnic minorities.

Outrageous and disturbing. This is surely a sign of the end times. Nostradaumus was right after all!

Of all the folks in that region other than the Israelis, the Kurds are the closest to being the “good guys”. I still remember the “thank you America” ads they took out after we got rid of Sadaam.

The Kurds are among the best of irregulars operating anywhere in the world. They have absolutely no doubts about what kind of enemy they are up against, and they can be totally ruthless in their engagements with that enemy.

Which is about the only way to respond.

It’s all just a part of this rich tapestry we call life.

Mom belongs at home with her children. Let dad go off to war.

A prayer for her safety that she will return home to her children.

I admire her courage and willingness to fight to defend Kurds and others from Isis in Iraq. It’s shame that more of the world can’t get it together to fight those animals. I’m not sure that it’s worth the risk of her leaving 3 (presumably fairly young) children motherless, but that’s ultimately her call, not mine.

The correct spelling is “Nostradamus”...and what exactly did he say about American women joining the Kurds to fight ISIS?

“Ugly tatted broad.”

That’s all you can come with to say about this? Besides the fact that it’s irrelevant, I’d argue that it’s untrue. I’m not real big on tattoos, but otherwise I would say she’s a reasonably attractive woman. But again, that’s totally irrelevant to the story here.

Tatting yourself all over points to character, or a lack of it. Character directs your life.

Why is that irrelevant?

Stupid woman. Her responsibility is to her children first, especially since she apparently decided they didn’t need a father.

FWIW, the Kurds often treat their women about as roughly as any of the peoples of the region. Female genital mutilation and honor killings are common. They also played a truly major role in the Armenian genocide, both as Ottoman troops and as freelance killers and looters.

I read the article. I saw no mention that she was married. Probably a safe bet to assume those poor kids have no daddy at home.

Certainly they have no mother.

Sad.

Why is your opinion that she’s “ugly” relevant at all? In what way is whatever her tattoos imply about her character (and I think you’re making some assumptions there, given how common tats have become) relevant to the story? I have no idea, because all you saw fit to mention is “ugly tattooed broad”.
