A third of Russians fear military attack by US, poll finds

Almost a third of Russians fear an invasion and occupation of their country by the United States, a new poll indicates.

The respected Levada Centre polling agency in Moscow found that 31 per cent of respondents in a survey conducted last month thought the US represented a threat of military takeover, up from 21 per cent in 2007.

The poll also found that 48 per cent of respondents believed the US wanted to “create obstacles to Russia’s development” and 40 per cent believed Washington wanted to establish control over the Russian economy.

Asked who would win if there was a war between Russia and the United States and/or the Nato countries, 33 per cent said Russia, 5 per cent said the US/Nato and 52 per cent agreed with the statement, “in such a war there can be no winners”.

Patriotic sentiment was running high last month in the run-up to celebrations in Moscow to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

State television repeatedly tells viewers that the US is intent on surrounding and subjugating Russia, which identified Nato expansion as a key external threat to the country when it revised its military doctrine in December.

Russia’s ally turned on them after Russia had already invaded Finland and Poland.

Right now Russia is invading Ukraine.

Our defenses must be maintained to defend ourselves from Russian aggression.

WE are intervening in Ukraine?

We are supposed to forbid nations to join NATO?

Your “we” is evidently power hungry Putin, and the Russian Army.

“Russia is more likely to be attacked by space aliens than by Americans.”

In ordinary times, MasterGunner01, I’d agree with you. We generally see these things the same way. But with this Administration, almost anything stupid and dangerous in foreign relations could happen.

It really doesn’t seem like a safe bet that Obama will not do something so provocative and aggressive that Putin will feel compelled to attack NATO or the US or both. Obama would do this out of personal spite, simply because he dislikes Putin, who has made him look so foolish and weak.

If Putin looks at the chessboard and sees that as a matter of internal Russian politics, he can’t take some minor military insult from Obama, and deduces he can get away with a massive military response because Obama is too cowardly or the US military is too weak to respond, we are all in for a bad time. But Obama, a coward and a bully who often miscalculates (beer summit, anyone?), could easily start it.

I pity the Gulf States leaders who made Obama look foolish yesterday. I hope they are ready for the spiteful, mostly anonymous attacks of many kinds he will be unleashing.

President Putin, meet President Pusillanimity.

After centuries of being continually invaded, including most recently a very brutal Nazi invasion, most Russians are just conditioned to expect the next one.

"most recently" being 74 years ago, and being immediately preceded by Russian/Soviet invasions of the Baltic states, Poland, and Finland.

I believe there have been five major invasions of Russia over the centuries. The Mongol invasions in 1223 and 1236, Charles XII’s in 1707, Napoleon's invasion in 1812, WWI in 1917 and WWII in 1941.

On the other hand, Russia under various regimes invaded Poland in 1654 and 1792, Finland in 1808 and Sweden in 1809, Moldavia in 1853, the Ottoman Empire in 1855, Bulgaria in 1877, the Ottomans again in 1878, Tibet in 1904, the Ottoman Empire in 1915, Poland and Anatolia in 1920, Manchuria, Finland, Poland, and the Baltic States in 1939, Indochina in 1941, Germany, Bulgaria, Albania and Yugoslavia in 1944, Slovakia, Croatia, and Manchuria in 1945, Hungary in 1956, Czechoslovakia in 1968, Afghanistan in 1969, Georgia in 2008, and Ukraine in 2014.

Maybe the Russkies should stop being so paranoid.

I read somewhere a couple of weeks ago that the Russians have designs on Alaska. I didn't give it much thought but if Putin were to move on Alaska, what the hell is 0 going to do?

First sign of a Russian attack would send Bathhouse Barry off to a corner to put a load in his panties.

“Even more likely by the Chinese, whose population would make good use of all Siberia’s resources.”

The ChiComm apes got their butts kicked by the NVA in Vietnam in 1979. The ChiComms can only dream about attacking Russia. By 2030, half the population of China will be more than 50 years of age. It faces the same problem as a Japan - an aging population.

India, with half its population under the age of 30 by 2030, will be the new economic and military power on the continent.

True. China is a very old country and their tricks are well-known. This is not the first time in history when they are an economic superpower, they are actually larger than that comparing to the rest of the world early in 19th century and even more powerful centuries ago but they could have never been able to overcome a growth crisis and had hard landings all the time.
Their record on military conquest is not that bright too. They were never able to convert their enormous economic power into military strength despite the fact they fielded massive military and had superior technology. I don’t even remember them being good at war unless it is some sort of internal conflict or government vs citizens.
It is clear that current Chinese peak is not any historical anomaly and they have so many problems snowballing that it doesn’t take clairvoyance to see their nadir behind.
China is extraordinary vulnerable, both militarily and economically and it is surrounded by capable potential enemies who wouldn’t mind to join forces and jump on Chinese if needed.
