The KNIL recruited Dutch volunteers and foreign mercenaries of several nationalities.
The foreign troops consisted of Flemish, German, Swiss, and French volunteers.
However, Walloons, Arabs, and nationals of both the United Kingdom and United States were forbidden from serving.
Other foreigners who could not prove fluency in either Dutch or German were also not accepted for service.
