well, sad, yes, indeed it is, HOWEVER as he went thru the pearly gates, all his shipmates were waiting on him...
now i know some people here believe in a stern God, me, i tend to think, God, with a rather wry smile, shall look the other way, and close his ears to the rather salty expletives used to welcome him home...
A few years ago I was at an Albertsons grocery in Stuart Florida.
An older gent had one a WWII cap and I thanked him for his service.
It was a U.S.S. Indianapolis cap and he nodded his head and started crying.
His wife thanked me and helped him out the door.
Two books from author Doug Stanton are well worth recommending, one is about the USS Indianapolis
In Harm’s Way: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Tale of Its Survivors

The other is about the US entry into Afghanistan after 9/11

Thank you. Dad died in 1974. He never fully recovered from some things he picked up in the jungles.
Dad was in the Cavalry before the war started and after Pearl Harbor, he was in charge of transporting mules from the States (San Francisco) to India where they went into Burma. Initially they were used to transport supplies in support of communications equipment and later, the Burma and Ledo Roads.
One of my brothers has some old black and white glossy photos and in several are Vinegar Joe.
Some of Dads friends are buried in China. Dad always praised Madam Chang for making sure the American cemeteries were taken care of. Before he died he was worried about the Chicoms not taking care of them.
