For widows, orphans, and the worn-out elderly. And as you say, most people did not live decades beyond 65. I was just looking a picture of My wife’s grandfather. He was under 60 but looked closer to seventy-five.

When the Game of Life came out in in 1860, you retired at age 50 of old age.

Actually even today many people do not make it to age 65 or 66. They never collect SS or Medicare benefits. But they paid all their lives until they died. I’m sure the govt counts on it.
