Philadelphia train crash engineer lays low as scrutiny heats up

A portrait of the engineer at the helm of a speeding Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia began to emerge on Thursday as the man's lawyer said his client could not remember the crash and rescuers pulled an eighth body from the wreckage.

With the engineer facing intense scrutiny over his role in the accident, Philadelphia police said they launched a criminal investigation into Tuesday's crash of the New York-bound train.

Bostian was described as quiet and unassuming by people who crossed his path in Forest Hills, a middle-class section of Queens where he resides.

Three workers at the nearby Gloria Pizza shop said Bostian was a regular customer.

"He comes in once or twice a week and orders a slice," said a man named Tony, who did not want to give his last name. "He's a nice guy, polite."

But Yochana Mashat, 58, who lives on the same floor as Bostian described his neighbor as standoffish.

He said he regularly rode the elevator with Bostian but never spoke to him. "He's like a statue," Mashat said.

Typical everyday twerpy looking kid......amazed he could handle a locomotive but I guess its almost as automated as todays airliners which is why the speculation about “where was he and WTF was he doing @ 106mph” is out there?

Started the train accelerating when he left Philadelphia station and then fell asleep, I bet.. Woke up as it entered the curve. Put on the brakes — but it was way too late.

Just sheer speculation on my part.

I saw a pic of the curve. It wasn’t something to speed thru. If he was going 100 mph, its his fault those people died.

Manslaughter x 8 = minimum 5 years each = 40 years. Another slew of person crimes on top of that could get him life.

don’t doubt it one bit.
Bet he figured the thing would drive it self and it would and had before, but it too needed supervision & it looks to me like he did to.
For some reason I don’t think this “twerp” should have been in that position. He was a frigen conductor and a few years later he’s driving the thing..something is wrong here!

Looks more and more to me that he did it on purpose. Crash happens right before the transportation bill vote with the positive train control amendment, and he blogged repeatedly on train safety, Gee, what a coincidence.

Two things are coming out about the wreck. First the NTSB says he increased speed before the curve up from 70 mph to over 100 mph, followed by reducing it a few seconds before the train left the rails.

The second thing that has not been focused on is that two trains that night were hit by "projectiles" (read PC-talk for bullets) from utes (i.e. thugs)in the North Philly neighborhood the tracks pass through - A SEPTA commuter train, and an Amtrak ACELA train from NYC to DC. From the looks of the right (engineer) side windshield of the engine, his train was the third. Mayor Nutter says the incident(s) has nothing to do with the wreck, but having the windshield in front of you hit by bullets will do nothing if not distract and likely disorient you for a few moments.

Don't be distracted by the talk about PTC delays coming out of Congress. It's irrelevant to this discussion. The reason is that Amtrak deserves a good part of the blame by not having existing train speed control technology installed on the northbound curves; they are installed on the southbound curves due to the train reduction in speed approaching Philly. This is old but very reliable technology and you can bet it will be installed before or shortly after the tracks reopen next week.

These Trains can not be driven without a continuous driver input, due to a "Dead Man's Switch".
This requires a driver to press, or be active at the Control Station.
I'll lay odds he mechanically over-road this safety somehow and was off doing who knows what.
That is why he applied the brakes too late.
IMHO.

I commend you on your poetic restraint in avoiding the obviously rhyming
"Queer," and
"Engineer"

I also hope that the nation's Public Schools will celebrate this as a momentous day in the Queer History of our fair land.
It is, as I never tire of pointing out, the first time in all recorded human history that

A Gay Man has Buggered a Train.

Going around a curve at twice the speed limit. Charge him with 2nd degree murder, killings resulting from a depraved indifference to human life.

See my #28; while we know what happened (speeding train jumps tracks), we don't know yet the "why." Your scenario was the cause of the Metro-North wreck north of NYC in December 2013.

(BTW, the NY Daily News just reported that engineer, who had an unreported medical condition [sleep apnea] will not be criminally charged for that wreck that killed four persons.
Metro-North engineer who fell asleep before 2013 train crash near Westchester is cleared of criminal charges )

This is the engine from the Philadelphia derailment:

Think maybe the guy woke up and sped up -- when his windshield got shattered?

Yeah. Something tells me that his “confusion” is rooted in the fact that he did not expect to survive the crash.

Or maybe that window damage is from the inside? When he hit it with his head during the collision? (The wiper is intact and over the shatters, suggesting that the force came from the interior.)
