Mouthing off in class or failing to follow a teachers instructions will no longer lead to suspension in Oakland schools, a ban that will be phased in and be fully in effect just over a year from now, the school board unanimously decided Wednesday night.
Oakland Unified will become one of a handful of California school districts that restrict suspensions to more serious offenses and eliminate the punishment for willful defiance a broad category of misbehavior that includes minor offenses such as refusing to take a hat off or ignoring teacher requests to stop texting and more severe incidents like swearing at a teacher or storming out of class. San Francisco and Los Angeles are also among those districts.
The state already bans suspension for willful defiance from kindergarten through third grade, and Oaklands decision extends it through high school.

Looks like Asian kids are quite the slackers.
Admin will send them right back to class.Even in school suspensions make the numbers look bad. And yes, it is chaos in many many public schools.
I guess the combat pay is what gets the total so high.
“A classroom cannot be controlled...”
You are absolutely correct. All it takes is one or two “don’t want to be there, rude, foul mouthed” trouble makers to ruin the education of the entire class. I personally suspect more fights as a result.. a good kid having enough of his classroom time interrupted and smashing into another kid. Of course.. that is suspendable behavior. It’s nuts.
Even outside of the urban districts NJ teachers make a ton of money; the unintended consequence is that many linger on in the jobs (since the pay automatically climbs, there is no penalty for non-performance, and it really is a part-time job - 180 days per year), and young people who spend years in school trying to get on the gravy train end up unable to find work. Our teacher population is aging but staying on the job (except in urban districts, where the “students” are outright abusive and violent), and they have bankrupted the state. Because of Governor Christie’s property tax caps, non-tenured teachers are dropping like flies as more & more money is funneled to those on the job the longest; some districts have started eating into the tenured tachers’ ranks as well due to budgetary limits.
We’ll end up with 75 year-old teachers with classes of 200 kids...
Yes, but the teachers will make $200k-$300k +++.
Such a deal!
That’s right; in the end they’ll end up in a state filled with teachers, cops/firement, illegal aliens, and welfare cases (because taxpayers here in NJ are fleeing in droves).
Not gonna end well.
I’m sure this will bring an end to the problem of willful defiance.
100% true. Why should a teacher risk being assaulted to teach animals like this who do not want to learn or do anything except continue to live on the government teat? They've got it good, and we are the biggest fools out there for continuing to let it occur.
