KIEV, Ukraine, May 13 (UPI) -- A Saudi Arabian company is to locally modernize and manufacture an Antonov light cargo aircraft for Saudi and international military and civilian markets.
The work comes under a new agreement between Taqnia Aeronautics Company, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's Taqnia investment firm and the Antonov Company of the Ukraine.
"The purpose of this agreement is to achieve a number of objectives, to include transfer of aviation industry technology to the Kingdom and to qualify ... Saudis to enter the aviation industry, where Saudi staff will be trained by Ukrainian experts," Taqnia said.
Taqnia said that under the agreement, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, Taqnia Aeronautics and Antonov will develop the current model of the aircraft, the Antanov 32, to accommodate new payload, range and takeoff capabilities. Also, the aircraft will receive upgrades such as a new cockpit with U.S.-made navigation devices.
The new variant developed in Saudi Arabia will be named the Antonov-132. Saudi Arabia will also own the intellectual property rights and the engineering designs for the aircraft.
Will it include some new features like, oh say a discernible safety margin?

Russian design, arab manufacturing.
What could possibly go wrong?

And aircraft designed and manufactured by talentless morons in the desert. Sounds good. Or maybe they’ll bring in a couple hundred Russian engineers as guest workers.

AN 2 colt?
Wanna see a workhorse plane that is incredible, lands in fields?
Here is a slow speed pass, and this plane has been used for a LONG TIME.

I love it.

It looks like you could run faster than it was flying by. I’ve heard they can crank the the engines if they run into an electrical problems and spit gum and baling wire were really used to get it to fly out of some the fields they landed in (in Siberia).
Hilarious!

Thanks I’ll look for the documentary.
Good luck on finding it. I looked for a couple of days before I found it.

Not so. I have an open offer to work on the project as wing lead. Flight controls mainly. I haven’t decided yet. I hate heat but like the money so I don’t want to live in SA. Most engineering will happen in Ukraine. They have a good engineering base there. Not sure where it will be built yet. Probably Ukraine. The Saudis will most likely just pay the bills. Nothing is as first reported in aviation.
15 year recovering aircraft engineer.
Do muslims design anything other then bombs?
Scimitars?
The value of An-2 is that it has quite a good payload and easier than car to maintain. It also takes talent to crash so easy and fool proof it is. These things belongs to the skies, they even have anchors on them for parking because aircraft tends to get airborne on itself under moderate wind.
