Scott Walker's crisis of faith
Politico ^ | 05/14/2015 | ALEX ISENSTADT

Scott Walker, the son of a Baptist preacher who says he takes his orders from God, has an unexpected problem on his hands: Many social conservatives don’t trust him.

Next week, the Wisconsin governor will travel to Capitol Hill to hold a private meeting with influential evangelical leaders, some of whom are expressing deep reservations about his track record on issues near and dear to them. Pointing to his past statements, and even his hire of a top campaign aide, they are openly questioning whether his views on abortion and gay marriage align with theirs and whether he’s willing to fight for their cause.

“Clearly he’s not well known within Washington, D.C., with social conservative leaders. He’s more known for his battle with unions in Wisconsin,” said Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council and one of about 50 people invited to huddle with Walker. “I think people are wondering, ‘Where does he stand?’”

Perkins, a former Louisiana state legislator and political operative who’s made himself into a power broker in evangelical circles, is one of Walker’s skeptics. “For the last few years, Governor Walker carefully avoided social issues, at one point even calling them a distraction,” he wrote in a newsletter that was sent to his group’s supporters in February. Perkins, who hasn’t endorsed in the Republican primary race, went on to suggest that Walker’s recent appeals to evangelicals were disingenuous.

I have not read the whole article, but the first sentence tells me this is a pure hit piece by Politico.

Two very telling lines from the article:

” Nearly a year later, after a Wisconsin ban on same-sex marriage was struck down in the courts, Walker gave an ambiguous but seemingly nonsupportive answer when asked whether the Constitution should be amended to restrict gay nuptials. “I think it’s resolved,” he said.

Walker described himself as “pro-life” but called the decision of whether to terminate a pregnancy “agonizing” and underscored legislation he approved that left “the final decision to a woman and her doctor” — language some perceive as an openness to abortion.

Except that some of us evangelicals who were early fans of Walker for his fight with the unions were disappointed by his apparent disinterest in some of the culture war issues. Those are deal breakers to us, and I’m guessing a pretty big factor in his current numbers. So maybe it is a hit piece, but the issues raised are real. I prefer Cruz.

Peace,

SR

Perhaps, but they talked to plenty of people that gave them material to work with.

Poor Scott. I’ve been telling his supporters on here that his “waffling” and “wishy-washy” back peddling on the issues in the past, would come back to haunt him. I like the guy, and if the Primary battle comes down between him and anyone else, besides Ted Cruz, I will vote for Walker. If he is the GOP nominee, I will work for, and vote for, him. But, he needs to decide what he really believes and stand for it.

That’s a step up from the usual sort of hit piece, if they actually identified multiple sources. But how many did they interview that didn’t support their thesis?

I’m not arguing for or against Walker. I am simply trying to make sure we don’t let the media become the arbiter of conservatism this time around.

The title and slant are needlessly provocative.

These seem more like statements of facts than statements of support.

When the gay marriage court decision came down, Walker ordered that gay marriages back to last June were legal. When the Religious Freedom acts were in the news, he made the statement that no such act would be passed in Wisconsin. He has avoided prolife issues as much as possible, often not signing passed prolife legislation for months. He will however, take credit for that prolife legislation that he had nothing to do with, if he is in fron of the right crowd. I try to weigh sources of information, but these are Walker’s own words and actions. I don’t trust him on immigration and I don’t trust him on social issues.

Politico creating another wedge issue to split the conservative support away from anyone and everyone, which naturally advantages Jeb.

The Left wants Jeb in to neutralize Hillary’s dynasty accusation, and age, and professional politician status, with his. Then she splits the draw because she can be the first “woman” president.

Freepers assist the Lefty media when they seem to love a fracture. Even days after the candidates have but just announced, it’s already mortal combat, threats not to vote at all if their pick can’t get coronated, and by next Thursday, etc., etc.
