I saw Punahou from a distance and was told in no uncertain terms that it was only for native Hawaiians. The Dunhams were not natives.

I think that’s the Kamehameha Schools. They were set up by a couple of the former royals expressly for orphaned/indigent native Hawaiians (full or part). Punahou was started as a boarding school for kids whose parents were on mission in Asia or the Pacific, so they were and are less picky that way.

Punahou is definitely not only for native Hawaiians - as the NY Times reported back in 2009, locals refer to it as “the whites’ school,” but it is probably more accurate to call it the school for the Hawaiian elite, which excludes most native Hawaiians. You can get a sense of the demographics from the basketball team..
