ATHENS, Ga. – A Georgia man who saved a dog from a hot Mustang has been arrested for smashing a window to free the animal.

Multiple news outlets report that Michael Hammons of Athens was charged with criminal trespassing after freeing a small Pomeranian mix in distress from a hot car outside a store. Witnesses say that while a group of shoppers waited for police to arrive to free the dog, the Army veteran smashed the window.

I live in GA and I don’t care what the law is I’d break a car window in a second if a dog was really in distress. If the owner wanted me arrested I’d make sure they knew that as soon as I bailed out I’d be on their Facebook page telling all their friends how they left Muffy to suffocate in the car. Ten bucks says I don’t go to jail. :-)

A man taking decisive action!

It is the owner of the dog that needs to go to court!

That law needs to be changed.

They can alert the deaf person when someone is at the door, when the phone rings, if there is a loud noise overnight, etc. They are very useful to the deaf

They just passed that pet saving law here in Washington state. It also has a clause that the owner cannot re-coup damages to the vehicle. I didn’t here if it applies to good Samaritans though.

I will never believe how people freak out about animals. They’re animals, soulless, chattle...

You forgot helpless, and that's where we come in. Quite honestly, if I see a dog in a car on a hot day, I'm breaking the window and letting it out. And when the owner comes back, I'm beating them down and throwing them in the trunk to roast. Anyone who doesn't have some amount of sympathy for the animals is a sociopath, far as I'm concerned.

I love dogs, but not every dog in a car is in distress. A crazy PETA type confronted my husband during cold weather and screamed at him that she was calling 911 because one of our dogs was in the car with the windows open.

Some people are just not reasonable.

I’m no particular fan of pets but this guy did the right thing. Sometimes there is a cost to doing the right thing.

It’s funny, but I doubt they had to break the windows to use the hose. It’s a flat hose before water is pressurizing it. They could have run it over the top of the car and just had a cop put a boot clamp on it.

I’ll chip in for his fine. A human keeping a pet assumes responsibility for its welfare.

Now see, no big deal here. If it's 40 degrees out, it's probably around 60 or so with windows up in the car. Clearly not a threat to the dog. On the other hand, if it's 80 out, it can reach up to 100 in a car with windows up. That is just wrong.

“A crazy PETA type”

That says it all right there!

I guess ‘common sense’ just ain’t too common anymore.

This was Oconee county in Georgia. The Sheriff there is very conservative and very pro 2nd Amendment. The lady insisted that he be arrested as technically not covered under Georgia law. The Sheriffs department made sure she was cited by Animal Control on a cruelty charge.

The driver of the vehicle should have been arrested for being in possession of a 'hot' Mustang!

Oh?... Well, never mind. :)

It’s Atlanta where no good deed goes unpunished. Just look at their political leaders and you will understand.

My guess is that Mark Levin would love to take this to a jury trial.
