FDA recommends ending lifetime ban on gay men donating blood

The Obama administration is calling for the end to a lifetime ban on blood donations from gay and bisexual men, acknowledging that the policy “is perceived by some as discriminatory.”

The Food and Drug Administration proposed new rules on Tuesday that would roll back the ban, though it still restricts gay men from donating blood if they have had sex with another man within a year.

The proposal still marks the country’s biggest step yet toward changing the 30-year-old prohibition.

Critics of the ban, which was enacted during the national AIDS epidemic in 1983 and last updated in 1992, say it ignores mounds of scientific evidence concluding that blood donations from gay men pose no risk than the greater public if properly screened. The FDA said in its draft rules that the ban has become less effective over time, admitting that “some individuals knowingly donate despite the deferral."

The agency will now collect public comments on the rule for 60 days.

The American Medical Association quickly praised the move, releasing a statement that called it “a step in the right direction to end the lifetime ban that prohibits men who have had sex with men (MSM) from ever donating blood.”

Wanna bet the ruling elite will have its own blood bank with a ban on gay blood?

Will those that pass the new rule, give a unit
or two to each of their children?

.... or will there be two types of blood, like
two types of healthcare? and two types of Laws?

Now you know why JWs and Christian Scientists won’t allow blood transfusions!

You’d think that the sodomites would have enough common sense to not donate blood themselves. But having a sodomite (probably many) in our White House, I’m sure that gives them the confidence to infect everyone else.

You would think, but this presumes that you are dealing with sanity, which you are not. There are homosexuals out there who feel it is their duty to spread AIDS. Oddly enough, there are homosexuals out there who are trying to catch it.

Again, we aren't dealing with sanity here.

Guess who stopped donating blood?

I don’t feel comfortable knowing that I’m now at risk for HIV because of political correctness.

OH HELL NO....

I guess mentioning the Great American Hemopheliac Holocaust from AIDS-tainted blood, of the 80’s/90’s, is just too impolitic to even think about, right?

The critics are in error. The ban doesn’t ban men who have had sex with men from donating blood, it bans men who have had sex with a man since 1977.

And it doesn’t ban homosexuals from donating blood. It bans men who have had sex with a man.

If you’ve had cancer you cannot donate blood, even if you’ve been in remission for 50 years. So you tell me how this makes sense? I’m going to accept blood from someone who might have undiagnosed AIDS? Are we crazy?

Ryan White got a tainted blood transfusion and died of AIDS.

So did Isaac Asimov.

The queers used the face of that innocent young boy to lobby for greater funding to cure the other million or so buttf***ing perverts. It was propaganda. They made Ryan White the public face of AIDS because some disease ridden sicko wouldn't have induced much sympathy, though it would have been the more common truth.

I would expect most prior to 1977 are now safely dead, and will not be infecting anyone.

And it doesn’t ban homosexuals from donating blood. It bans men who have had sex with a man.

Your effort to imply a distinction here is falling short.

Well then, I’m looking for my ban to be soon lifted. I haven’t been able to donate since I was in Turkey in 1980 due to potential exposure to hepatitis C.

If the FDA started caring about public health, they would have to stop everything they’re doing.

Yep, a federal judge ruled that a state assault weapon ban was constitutional because of the “perception of safety” bu the public.

I would assume they look for antibodies. What if the donor doesn't have any yet?

RE: FDA recommends ending lifetime ban on gay men donating blood

Question — how are you going to determine whether or not a person is gay?

You think everyone is going to tell the truth?
