“It would undoubtedly lead to the deaths of around 1.5 billion people.....”
That is said as if it would be bad news.
Location, location, it’s all about location... ;>)

To put it into celestial perspective the closest known approach of mars to us is about 35 million miles IIRC. The moon is around a quarter of a million miles away. It’s like a missile passing between your garage and your neighbor’s house.

IIRC there was an asteroid awhile back that passed by us closer than the moon. Still obviously far enough away - but that is getting pretty close.
I recall one of these that was deemed real close. Although they didn’t see it until AFTER it had gone past us.

Get those oil drilling guys to save us. Yeah, that’s the ticket. And that asteroid was the size of Texas. Better yet, just call Hollywood.. they can solve any problem.

Yes they are...a mile wide object hitting the earth would be like a large grain of sand hitting a basketball...
I’m not convinced it would be a world wide catastrophe either...
Not saying the damage would not be massive...just not life ending...

I hope it hits my neighbor's house. That guy always plays his stereo too loud. Heck, you don't need an asteroid. My neighbor used to play her stereo too loud. Until I started blasting a sports air horn under her front open window. Did that a couple days and her stereo is nice and quiet now.

The book was great. The movie...not so much. Although it is campy enough to be fun once in a while.

The catch is believing anything NASA says. If it were on a direct collision course they would post what their masters tell them to post.
