This episode between the blood stained Raul Castro and the all dressed in white Pope is a recurrent theme in Catholic literature. In Manzoni’s classic novel “The Betrothed” published in 1827, an evil murderous thug called “The Unnamed” is transformed by his audience with a saintly Cardinal. A skeptic could argue that the wily Castro knew exactly what he was doing and used the Pope as a moral carwash to make him more palatable to the international community he must engage to save destitute Cuba. Yet there will be people who will believe that Castro has repented and has been redeemed.

On his visit to Cuba, Francis will give a five-hour homily against “greed” and the “worship of money” and the danger of carbon. Just what the Cuban people need to hear.

BTW: How many people realize that 90% of Cubans are black, while roughly 100% of the Communist government is white?

Has Cuban president Raúl Castro, once described by a senior Vatican official as a man with a soul “like a stone,” had a Damascus Road experience like Saint Paul, such that he’s now preaching the kind of politics he had long tried to destroy? Fidel Castro’s little brother and political heir was certainly suggesting as much, in remarks to the press after his May 10 visit at the Vatican with Pope Francis.

What if the conversion went the other way?

With this Pope, you have to ask.
