Michigan reports four secondary violations under Jim Harbaugh

Before new Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has put his first points on the scoreboard in The Big House, the school has self-reported four minor NCAA violations in football that have occurred under Harbaugh's watch.

The violations are classified as Secondary/Level III. Violations of that nature typically result in no punitive action by the NCAA and are handled through education of the coaching staff through the school's compliance department. According to mlive.com, two of the violations directly involved the former San Francisco 49ers head coach.

In one violation, Harbaugh donated an autographed team helmet and a jersey to an auction without having the donation first reviewed by compliance. The donation benefited a high school scholarship fund, which is prohibited by the NCAA. In another case, four days before the donation violation, Harbaugh and two of his staff members permitted a recruit to sit with them in premium seating at a hockey game.

The other violations involved impermissible recruiting materials sent to a recruit electronically, and an assistant coach who spoke publicly about a pending incoming transfer prematurely.

Harbaugh left the 49ers after the conclusion of the 2014 regular season and signed a seven-year contract with Michigan worth $5 million per year.

When I worked with a Big Ten football program we got a secondary violation because our players were drinking hot chocolate that was supposed to be for the coaches. Some of these secondary violations are hilarious.

The NCAA can't find wrong doing when it is serious, but when it is nonsense they are right on top of it.

The NCAA is a farce.

UMaine got hit with violations because someone bought them lunch in the school cafeteria. This was opposed to the govt school buying them lunch via their sports scholarship assistance.

The NCAA needs to be disbanned.

Old ‘’business’ models don’t work.

Time to free the student athletes and coaches from the chains of failed leadership.

This is what I read on another site:

Separately, on March 18, Jim Harbaugh sent an autographed team helmet and jersey to an auction organized by a former high school classmate of his to benefit suicide prevention and awareness. The donation was not reviewed beforehand by Michigan's compliance office, and the items that were auctioned ended up being used to assist a scholarship fund in the name of a student who had committed suicide, something Harbaugh was not aware of, according to U-M's self-reported violation.

Per NCAA rules, programs/coaches may not personally donate items to benefit high school scholarship funds.

It sounds like the donation was well-intentioned and not for recruiting purposes. Regardless, you have to do things the right way. Using the school's compliance department is probably a good start.

Harbaugh, like Tom Brady, has walked a perilous line in exhibiting some tendencies that may be construed as conservative. (Harbaugh’s pro-American Sniper comments, Brady’s skipping lunch with Barack...)

Therefore, they must be punished!!!!
