DEA Steals $16,000 In Cash From Young Black Man, Because He Must Be A Drug Dealer
Huffington Post ^ | 05/07/2015 | Nick Wing

Rivers said the agents questioned passengers at random, asking for their destination and reason for travel. When one of the agents got to Rivers, who was the only black person in his car, according to witnesses, the agent took the interrogation further, asking to search his bags. Rivers complied. The agent found the cash -- still in a bank envelope -- and decided to seize it on suspicion that it may be tied to narcotics. River pleaded with the agents, explaining his situation and even putting his mother on the phone to verify the story.

No luck.

“These officers took everything that I had worked so hard to save and even money that was given to me by family that believed in me,” Rivers told the Journal. “I told (the DEA agents) I had no money and no means to survive in Los Angeles if they took my money. They informed me that it was my responsibility to figure out how I was going to do that.”

I have reached the point that I fear the law more than I fear the criminal.

“If they were tracking someone then there is much more to the story.”

That’s certainly true. The article mentions that they questioned Rivers more thoroughly than others in the case, and implies that it was because he was black. Of course, it also could have been because they had a tip or other information about Rivers. More information is definitely necessary to piece together what happened here.

That said, whatever their reason for seizing this money, the process by which they did it (civil asset forfeiture) is a disaster.

I hope you are doing well.

Now, if the cops know they have a drug dealer leaving town they are going to act.

Like I said, I don’t know enough about this situation.

It sounds to me like they were hunting for someone and found it.

This story has been posted before.

While the DEA has no business taking this guys cash, it’s hard to believe he was carrying that much without being armed.

99.9% probability that he was a drug mule and the cash was the proceeds of illegal activity.

The lesson here is that there is nor criminal organization more large or more powerful than the Federal Government under the leadership of Hussein Obama.

These DEA crooks at least were racist enough to target the black guy and steal some drug money for themselves, instead of targeting a tourist or something.

They should not seize any assets until it is court ordered.

They would need to remove and document all assets upon detainment or arrest.

Doesn't matter if they found a bad guy if the cops are breaking the law by acting outside of Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.

You can't uphold ANY law by breaking the law.

You obviously feel that the ends justify the means. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it sounds like.

Sounds RACIST to me.

Our Black friend should file a RACIAL DISCRIMINATION lawsuit.

I don't care what color you are, the DEA, or anyone else, have NO GROUNDS to seize your money or anything else from you if you are NOT arrested and charged with a crime.

Agreed. And, if hey want to permanently seize someone’s assets, it should be on something more than a preponderance of the evidence standard.

Of course, it also could have been because they had a tip or other information about Rivers.

Then they could have gotten a warrant. And why start by questioning other people on the train? Amazing how far some people will go to justify government thuggery.

This is not a illegal search indication.

This individual was being sought by justice.

Don’t mix up individuals walking down the street with Clyde Barrow.

Not enough information? He wasn’t arrested and his proprty was seized without due process. Absolutely all the information required.

This individual was being sought by justice.

You don't have a shred of evidence to back that up. And the fact that they started by questioning other people instead of going straight to him indicates otherwise. Keep licking those jackboots though.

If he was not arrested then they have no right to steal his assets.

I apologize to all on this thread.

The Constitution doesn't authorize the DEA to do any seizing at all.

The DEA is acting outside of the law authorizing DEA action.

It doesn't matter who the individual is.

This is about un-constitutional behavior by the DEA.

If they were tracking someone then there is much more to the story.

Not really. Searching for person A does not sanction confiscating the belongings of person B.

If they give 1k to Jesse and 1k to Al Sharpton, there won’t be any protest or problem at all.
