Rep. Ron DeSantis has only been in elected office for two-and-a-half years, but the sophomore congressmen from Jacksonville has decided he's ready for the next step. Today, DeSantis announced his campaign for the senate seat soon to be vacated by Marco Rubio, becoming the first major Republican in the race.
Like Rubio, DeSantis is a Tea Party and conservative favorite and announced his decision with endorsement from three key groups: the Club For Growth, the Senate Conservatives Fund, and FreedomWorks, all of which are known for sticking to hardcore right-wing principals, and aren't afraid to criticize or take on mainstream Republicans who stray from them.
That isn't unusual for DeSantis. When he ran for the U.S. House in 2012, he snagged the endorsements of right-wing heroes like Donald Trump, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, RedState blogger Erick Erickson, and former U.S. ambassador John Bolton. He ended up crushing the competition in that six-way primary, besting his nearest competitor by 16 points.
He did not disappoint his conservative supporters. The National Review rated him the third most conservative congressman from Florida in 2013.
Before entering Congress, DeSantis spent time as a legal advisor in the Navy (literally a member of JAG) and as something of an online conservative columnist. He's been published in National Review Online, Human Events, and the Washington Times, among many other of your conservative uncle's favorite political sites. DeSantis also has degrees from Yale and Harvard, and was deployed to Iraq in 2007 as part of his Navy service.

T.E.A.
Rubio making a big mistake
But RDS could make it a win / win situation for Conservatives
Just saying.
Bring back American jobs.
Just saying.
Wish you would stop cut-and-pasting your idiotic nonsense into threads.
Baloney.
America needs more jobs.
The GOP needs to fight to bring jobs back to America.
The big problem with America is that BOTH PARTIES are selling off America.
GOP be the solution. Be for America.
This is not cut/paste. America is sinking fast.
We need to rebuild, right here in the USA.
He’s not a serious candidate until the GOPe attempts to destroy him.
I give it until Monday...
Has Rubio already passed the deadline where he has to declare for one office or the other...or is that still a ways out? I don’t know.
The above paragraph needs some editing.Like Rubio,DeSantis is a Tea Party and conservative favorite and announced his decision with endorsement from four key groups: the Club For Growth, the Senate Conservatives Fund, Madison Project, and FreedomWorks, all of which are known for sticking to hardcore right-wing principals, and aren't afraid to criticize or take on mainstream Republicans who stray from them.
Madison Project has also endorsed Ron DeSantis.
I sent a few dollars from Texas to DeSantis via the Senate Conservatives Fund. He has a solid conservative voting record since his election to the U.S. House and I wish him well in the Senate race.
The filing deadline for the Florida Senate race is May 6th of NEXT year.
Rubio says he’s out of the Senate race, period. And apparently no one doubts him.
Thanks, but interesting. Rubio can still file for ANOTHER YEAR. By then he’ll likely be out of the presidential race...so it’s either a (relatively) easy re-election, or trying to get a job on K-Street. So...I do doubt him, although, of course, I understand that he needs to say what he’s saying to maintain credibility.
The NRSC was courting Jeff Atwater (who ultimately passed on running) I doubt that would have happened if Rubio didn’t assure them he was out.
If he gets back after in coming in 6th in the NH primary, that would piss a lot of people off. De Santis and probably at least one more (I’m sure the RINOs would want someone else) major Republican will have been running for months at that point and aren’t gonna wanna drop out just like that.
“I doubt that would have happened if Rubio didnt assure them he was out.”
We’ll see...but as I noted, there’s not much for him to do after he learns a lesson regarding presidential politics. He simply hasn’t been around long enough and has too little left-wing credibility (other than on open borders) to be worth anything on K-Street.
He’s going to feel lonely out there and LOTS OF PEOPLE will be pushing him to run, since he’s an incumbent for re-election and instant favorite.
We shall see.
