CLEVELAND, Ohio A verdict in the voluntary manslaughter trial of Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo will not come until after May 18, a court spokesman said Friday.
Cuyahoga Common Pleas Judge John P. O'Donnell initially said he didn't intend to issue a verdict until after Cleveland police week is over. Cleveland's police memorial commemoration runs from May 14 to 17.
At the end of the trial, O'Donnell said was aware of unrest related to police use of force in other cities, including Baltimore. He also said he's been notified that city and county officials are worried about potential protests following the verdict in this case.
At least one rally is planned by OrganizeCle for two hours following the announcement of the verdict.
A spokesman with the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas informed media of the new timeline, and confirmed it with a tweet Friday afternoon.
Brelo, 31, is charged in connection with a Nov. 29, 2012 police chase and shooting that ended in the deaths of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams.
Throughout the month-long trial, prosecutors argued Brelo acted unreasonably and with the intent to kill when he jumped on the hood of Russell's 1979 Chevy Malibu and fired 15 final shots down at the two people. Defense attorneys argued that Brelo, like the other 12 officers who also fired shots, was afraid for his life and therefore justified in any use of force.
This was just announced on Ch.3 WKYC/Cleveland today at approx. 7:30/7:35AM Saturday,5/23/15.

Judge to deliver Michael Brelo verdict
Excerpt:
Brelo faces two counts of voluntary manslaughter. He was involved in the 22-minute police pursuit that began outside the Justice Center in Cleveland late Nov. 29, 2012, and ended in the parking lot of Heritage Middle School in East Cleveland. The pursuit followed a blue 1979 Chevy Malibu that had two occupants, later identified as driver Timothy Russell, 43, and passenger Malissa Williams, 30.
Brelo fired 49 shots, the most of any officer. He jumped on the hood of the Malibu and fired the last 15 shots after other officers had stopped shooting.
In all, 13 police officers fired 137 shots.
