From a woman married 34 years:...

Back at you with a high-5 from a man who has been married to the same girl for 30 years.

Together we had and raised 4 good college-educated kids (includes 2 who are USMC), are both professionals, rose to Sr. management in our respective fields, before I went into business on my own and she joined me as my business partner and has been so for the last 19 years.

We both lived on our own before we married and established our careers independent of each other. We both cook, but she's a food scientist by trade so her creative skills in that area are far beyond mine. Me, creative? Not so much. I'm just a biochemist.

Jesus Christ has been at the head of our relationship from the beginning and after 30 years, I can truthfully say that I married the kind of girl every guy wished he was married to.

I believe that the Christian man who truly puts Christ first and makes the prayerful effort to find a wife of a similar world view and value system will be successful in God's own time.

Good marriages are the reason a guy like me will give marriage a second try. To learn from his mistakes, try to be a better man and to pick smarter.

This thread is about men avoiding marriage. So just to keep the focus there, I will say the best a man can do is to choose wisely and to love his wife like Christ loves the church. But that will only maximize the odds in your favor. She still might find an old bf on Facebook and divorcing you. Christians get divorced too.

Again, if it weren’t for good marriages like yours, I wouldn’t even have bothered to try a second time.

Married 28 years, through crushing financial troubles and serious mental illness, yet we still love each other. I must do EVERYTHING that normally the wife would do, cooking, cleaning, etc. Yet I do it joyfully. I love my wife more each day, and when the sun shines through the dark clouds she tells me she loves me too.

We are both absolutely committed to marriage, and to each other. Five children later, our commitment is not dimmed. I am sorry for those who have had bad experiences, but marriage is the foundation of society, and when we lose the wonderful understanding of marriage between a man and a woman who commit to each other "through thick or thin" this great nation will be lost.

Marriage is self-sacrifice, the giving of ourselves to the other. It is not "What is the other doing to meet MY needs?" but "How can I better serve my helpmate?"

Sadly, it appears our great nation is abandoning the biblical understanding of marriage, and will suffer the dire consequences.
