Pamela Geller: A Response to My Critics—This Is a War
Time.com ^ | Pamela Geller

Some are saying I provoked this attack. But to kowtow to violent intimidation will only encourage more of it.

Sunday in Garland, Texas, a police officer was wounded in a battle that is part of a longstanding war: the war against the freedom of speech. Some people are blaming me for the Garland shooting — so I want to address that here.

The shooting happened at my American Freedom Defense Initiative Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest, when two Islamic jihadists armed with rifles and explosives drove up to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland and attempted to gain entry to our event, which was just ending. We were aware of the risk and spent thousands of dollars on security — and it paid off. The jihadis at our free speech event were not able to achieve their objective of replicating the massacre at the offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine last January — and to go it one better in carnage. They were not able to kill anyone. We provided enormous security, in concert with the superb Garland police department. The men who took the aspiring killers down may have saved hundreds of lives.

And make no mistake: If it weren’t for the free-speech conference, these jihadis would have struck somewhere else — a place where there was less security, like the Lindt cafe in Australia or the Hyper Cacher Kosher supermarket in Paris.

So, why are some people blaming me? They’re saying: “Well, she provoked them! She got what she deserved!” They don’t remember, or care to remember, that as the jihadis were killing the Muhammad cartoonists in Paris, their friend and accomplice was murdering Jews in a nearby kosher supermarket. Were the Jews asking for it? Did they “bait” the jihadis? Were they “provoking” them?

I don't know. I think maybe we are looking at this the wrong way.

The next time some Bible-thumpin', pro-life, right-wing Sarah Palin worshipper kills an abortionist, the Men Seeking Men media will be more understanding.

Libs always whine about blaming the victim when the victim robs a store for cigars in a strong arm robbery then gets himself shot...

But in this cause blaming the victim for expressing her free speech, that is acceptable...

Free speech, if duly exercised, offends just about everyone at some point. It’s odd that the very principle for which this nation has always stood will be the instrument of its undoing. It looks like we will soon exercise our freedom of speech at the expense of losing our heads. Our “fearless leader” has totally failed his oath of office. Rather than protecting us from all enemies, both foreign and domestic; he has made us all human fodder for just about all of them. He hates us.

It is the same as blaming a rape victim saying she was asking for it.

... a longstanding war: the war against the freedom of speech.

This is not a war against the freedom of speech.

This is a war against all of Western Civilization.

Hey feminists:

You now have our nomination for the female to be printed on the $20.00 bill.

A true hero, that may turn the tide of our complacency.

“....Christians are forced to conduct homosexual marriage..”

Christians can’t be forced to conduct a gay marriage. If one thinks losing their head for drawing Mohamed is bad, consider what one will lose if they conduct a gay marriage. “The government made me do it” is not an excuse. Christians give up their lives every day for refusing to bow to any other but The Almighty. American Christians shouldn’t feel that they are exempt from having to make that choice. Performing a gay marriage before the Holy Altar of a House of God is profaning it. Read up on what happens to those who have done it. To say that it isn’t advisable is an understatement.

Here’s what people don’t realize. The death of free speech doesn’t happen suddenly. It erodes over time. First you can’t draw cartoons that offend. Next you can’t serve bacon because that might offend. Then muslim taxi drivers can refuse to carry women without headscarves or those carrying dogs. Freedom of Speech is eroded in small segments. How far are some Americans willing to go down that road?

Steely, I don't think you meant to imply any equivalency between the Ohio National Guard and ISIS wannabes, but one day after the 45th anniversary of the event it may be good to take a look back at what the left considers an unprovoked massacre. I was a high school student living twenty minutes away from the KSU campus and for us it was one of those "I remember every detail of where I was and what I was doing at that moment" when word reached us. We were getting ready to watch a baseball game back behind our building.

The National Guard shootings at Kent State were the result of a week of simmering and outright violence committed by a) leftist radicals who burned down the on campus ROTC Center and b) a wildcat Teamsters strike during which the guardsmen, most of who were about the same age as the KSU students, had spent 48 sleepless hours guarding truckers who were defying the strike and getting shot at from freeway overpasses.

On May 4 a group of screaming and rock throwing protestors pushed the guardsmen, sent on campus to prevent more riots and carrying bayonetted M1 Garands, down a hill. When the guardsmen fired they were shooting uphill and some of the bullets carried cross campus striking uninvolved students. So some of the "Four" were innocent bystanders and the whole incident was tragic.

But to say it was "unprovoked" is not exactly correct and in no way can one equate the guard and their actions with terrorists attempting to massacre dozens of people over an irreverent middle-finger-to-your-murdering-pedophile-false-prophet cartoon event.

I don’t understand why libtards are always pushing us to capitulate to terrorists. The want to hand the atomic bomb to Iran, let ISIS fighters into the country, disarm average Americans and gut our military to facilitate the establishment of a caliphate here. Are they STUPID enough to believe the Muslim overlords they admire won’t behead off of them?

How about a Muslim for a neighbor who starts whining when you grill pork and the smoke wafts into his yard? I wouldn't be surprised if this, in fact, hasn't already happened somewhere.

She should have done a Cartoon Jesus contest as well—maybe a draw Buddah or a Draw Moses? By doing so it would have made its point—Islamic people are nuts. But singling out Mohammed gave the liberals ammunition to say it was her fault. They missed the point of the whole thing.

And I asked Laura Ingraham this question in lite if her saying Geller should not have made a target...”what about those pesky radical Christians? Do we hear the media separating them from the rest like we are supposed to separate radical Islamist?”

The 1st Amendment does not protect Geller at an event like this unless it is the government who is attacking her.

I really wish people would not conflate free speech (the general concept) with the 1st Amendment, which is very specific in prohibiting on only the government from infringing on free speech.

In the Garland event, the government (police) were protecting her. So it was not an attack on her 1st Amendment rights.

What a great idea - next time, and there will be an next time,

open it up to drawings of all faiths.

It doesn’t even have to be necessarily a critical drawing,
as the Sharia proscription is on the image itself,
not on the criticism.
