FAIL: ONLY 18 PERCENT OF 8TH-GRADERS PROFICIENT IN US HISTORY
breitbart ^ | 4 May 2015 | by DR. SUSAN BERRY

Results of the “Nation’s Report Card” released this week by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show that only 18 percent of 8th-graders are “proficient” or above in U.S. history, and only 23 percent are proficient in civics.

Despite hundreds of billions of dollars poured into education programs in the United States via the U.S. Department of Education, the “Nation’s Report Card” states that 8th-graders’ average NAEP scores in U.S. History, Geography, and Civics demonstrated no significant change since 2010 when students were last assessed. In geography, just 27 percent of U.S. 8th-graders performed at or above the proficiency level on the NAEP assessments.

Among white, black, Hispanic, and Asian students, Asians scored highest, with 33 percent proficient in U.S. History, 44 percent in geography, and 40 percent in Civics. White students are at 26 percent proficiency level in U.S. History, 39 percent in geography, and 32 percent in civics. Only 6 percent of black students scored at the proficient level in U.S. History, 7 percent in geography, and 9 percent in civics, while Hispanics were at 8 percent, 11 percent, and 12 percent, respectively.

A breakdown between students who attend public versus private schools finds that only 17 percent of 8th-graders who attend public school reached the proficiency level in U.S. History, 25 percent in geography, and 22 percent in civics, while 31 percent of those students assessed who attend private schools were proficient at U.S. History, 44 percent at geography, and 38 percent at civics.

Carter’s GA cohort Newton Gingrich was another advocate of the Dept. of Education. I don’t think he has called for its dismantlement and admitted his error of 1979, when he was just a freshman “Rockefeller Republican”.

Heck, that is possibly better than adults! Not long ago Gen-X had trouble figuring out the timeline of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Suspect they had stopped teaching those topics about then.

With common core, we should be GLAD only 18% of 8th graders are proficient in history. I’m serious. You should see the national social studies curriculum standards.

18%? Find me 5% of 8th graders, not counting Home Schooled, who can name any five of the first ten presidents, can list five of the Ten articles of the Bill of Rights, find me 5% that can write 100 words on the War of 1812.

1. We should outlaw Asians

2. 6%? No wonder they are largely ineffective citizens. They have no clue.

Your concise history of the USA unfortunately left out the key role(s) Brian Williams played. Please be more careful next time.

Well, I would imagine this has always been the case. We’ve been teaching US history in high school for decades. If kids were proficient by 8th grade, there would not be a need to teach it in high school.

Am I correct? These are test for proficiency for the child's grade level?

**Obviously** and 8th grader can not be expect to have the proficiency of a mature adult in any subject. Is a “duh” needed here?

Solution: Close down the colleges of education. Fire nearly all teachers who ever attended one. Begin the process of privatizing K-12 schooling. Hire. people with real degrees and life experience in the real capitalistic system.

Because the left-wing educational establishment made a conscious policy choice not to teach American history or any other relevant subject.

Ignorant people are easier to manipulate.

I think skyrocketing illegitimacy has a lot to do with the non-existent historical knowledge of Americans.

Growing up, I knew that my grandmother marched for Wilson down Pennsylvania Avenue—behind a banner that said, “He Kept Us Out of War.” She would say those words with a bitterness I’ll never forget.

I knew that both my grandfathers were in WWI. Now kids think WWI was before the Civil War, or something.

Wilson was President when my parents were born. Harding and Coolidge when they were tots. Roosevelt gave them the Depression and another war. Eisenhower was President in my own childhood. Now kids think Stalin was President just after Hoover. College kids don’t recognize a photo of Reagan.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The solution is not what the American people want. They demand the status quo still, and I think always will.
