Wow, actual good advice from the media, but your and your spouse really should have firearms and practice, practice practice. Also, practice response to attempted home invasions and assure that you will not hesitate if the situation arises.
The dog lets us know if anyone is even close to the house, at that point I am already armed before they can breech.
Up here in Canuckistan, Stephen Harper got the talking classes angry by saying the police can not always arrive in enough time, so using a gun can be justified in those instances. Two professors at the University of Ottawa went as far as writing up a set of guidelines about how to confront a potential home invader peacefully and of course joined in the voices against Harper. Really makes you wonder what the colour of the sky is in their world (as if I have to ask that question).
After that, your kids get to live in Cuba the rest of their lives...........

If it is the police and not a gang of cracked-out tweakers, they will be better trained and armed than you, and can call in backup.

Limit access to your property via motor vehicle. All access is visable from the house, and has M.A.D sensors buried to detect vehicles.
Add IR beam fences to detect foot access, these are the red beam things you see in the movies, except they are not viable in real life.
Hardened door frames and doors (no glass panels in doors) and quality, not Chinese made deadbolts.

Motion lights as mentioned in the article should be the first upgrade to any home. And fences and gates are a must as well.

low light conditions and possibly somewhat confined quarters.
Outcome - Massive loss of blood and possible body parts by bad guys. No one died but it wasn't for lack of trying.
Note: The homeowner was not skilled with a blade and that day God smiled on him that day(lucky). It goes to show what proper mindset and not being afraid to commit or hesitate can do.

Our standing SOP is the minute we hear our mobile alarm (Chihuahua named Coco) go off we grab the semi autos laying on each nightstand and hit the hallway one high one low. Anything coming down that hallway dies.

ALSO DO NOT SAY "stop or I'll shoot"... that tells the criminal where you are - he will then shoot you. Criminals don't use the rules of 'fair play' or they wouldn't be criminals. Shoot to kill - and kill all that come within your 'fatal funnel'...
And if these armed men with guns happen to be SWATs and you respond with a gun or even a loud voice you will most likely be dead and all your possessions sequestered so that your survivors, if the rest of your family is not shot also, will have to have attorneys and a lot of time to regain some of the family property.
