WASHINGTON During a training course on defending against knife attacks, a young Salt Lake City police officer asked a question: How close can somebody get to me before Im justified in using deadly force?
Dennis Tueller, the instructor in that class more than three decades ago, decided to find out. In the fall of 1982, he performed a rudimentary series of tests and concluded that an armed attacker who bolted toward an officer could clear 21 feet in the time it took most officers to draw, aim and fire their weapon.
The next spring, Mr. Tueller published his findings in SWAT magazine and transformed police training in the United States. The 21-foot rule became dogma. . .

You realize if cops change tactics the desired goal is to force ccw people to do so as well.
How about instead we just all work hard to get Ted Cruz in the WH, then we won’t have to deal with this nonsense.
But...but...but...isn’t it better to die than to hurt someone’s feelings?</libspeak>
“Hmmm, yes, yes, I see. And how does that make you feeel?, hmm?” - liberal police training manual
“Yes, I understand that you are angry and that is why you are stabbing me. Perhaps we could dialogue instead.”
>> How close can somebody get to me before Im justified in using deadly force?
Answer: It depends upon their color. If they are swarthy (or darker), then they must actually be penetrating you with a knife/bullet/pipe/their Johnson/whatever before you are justified in using force to defend yourself.
If they’re white, they must be within range of a police sniper rifle, or closer, and you may then have your way with them.
“We don’t wish to harm you - we want to give you validation of your feelings!”
Good gawd. Sounds just like my relative who is a psychiatrist living in an ashram in TN. I kid you not.
Ok, so the “compassionate” approach will be to pass a law saying that only criminals have the right to use force. After all, they’re the ones so upset that they feel the need to use force. They can’t help themselves. Police have disciplines and self-control. Why give them the option of force? Policemen have jobs and don’t have as much to be upset about as the mental illness or downright evil that drives criminals to use force. Got that? That’s the “progressive” way to control crime, terrorism, you name it.
Liberal guilt complex enters the police force with deadly consequences for the cops and for law and order.
I think they need to use more force.
I believe politispeak calls is “interface”, now.
The 21 foot rule is still good (in fact I would use the 40 foot rule- remembering that you don't have to pull the trigger). If cops focus on setting up a situation where a confrontation is not required we'll have fewer situations where cops shoot people.
I have always thought that a cop that draws his pistol, but keeps it at his side, gives himself time to evaluate the situation until the last second. If a cop waits until the last moment to draw his weapon, there is a good chance he'll reactively pull the trigger when the sights are on the target.
Maybe thugs misunderstood. They thought it was “in yo face”.
I am all for a conservative in the WH but presidents dont run local pd’s. Nor should they.
