Tavis Smiley: Protests and Riots Could Become the New Normal
Time Magazine ^ | April 30, 2015 | Tavis Smiley

It’s a dignity thing — democracy is threatened by racism and poverty.

The two seminal pieces of Legislation in the 20th century happened just before the tumult of 1968–the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965. Fifty years later, we ought to be in a season of celebration. Instead, we find ourselves in an American catastrophe. Trayvon Martin. Eric Garner. Freddie Gray.

On April 4, 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. gave the most controversial speech of his life, “Beyond Vietnam.” A year later to the day, almost to the hour, he was assassinated. In that speech he had pointed out a triple threat facing America: racism, poverty and militarism. In 2015, what are the issues still threatening our democracy? Racism. Poverty. Militarism.

King’s views about how to redeem the soul of America had fallen on deaf ears. The younger generation wanted something more tangible than nonviolence. When Magnificent Montague, one of the most well-known black radio hosts in Los Angeles, used the phrase Burn, baby, burn, that resonated. 1968 was also the year of the Mexico City Olympics, when Tommie Smith and John Carlos held up their fists with the black gloves. The young people were chanting, “Black power!”(continued)

Made it all the way to here...”democracy is threatened by racism and poverty. “ That was the first line.

Somebody who immigrated here from Iran in 1969 told me, “ I didn’t even speak English and in the first week I had two job offers. It’s government who killed the job market. It’s government’s fault there are poor people. In 1969 anybody who wanted a job could get one.”

The way we should be politically responding to this and that includes conservative news commentary (what there is of it) and the talk show circut is by asking these two questions.

(1)If drug dealer Gray was killed as a result of a bad drug deal would we be hearing about him and would there be be rioting in the streets ?

(2) Of what benefit is it to the regime to allow these riots go on; As it works to legalize 10 million illegals who will be taking jobs away from poor blacks ?

With regard to so called Racism have people genuinely considered that blacks may be more “Racist” than whites. That is all they talk about.

Sooner or later, the Law of Diminishing Returns kicks in.

Protesters realize that all the rallies are producing exactly nothing and they start to stay home. Think of "Occupy".

There were a couple in the ‘40’s and a few since 1980 but we still have a way to go to beat the early 60s through the early 70s when literally hundreds of riots originating in African American neighborhoods broke out in American cities.

Correct response: Baltimore is fully governed by blacks. The office charged with murder is black. Next topic.

“”Somebody who immigrated here from Iran in 1969 told me, “ I didn’t even speak English and in the first week I had two job offers.””

I think someone was feeding you a line. I met plenty of Iranians (they called themselves Persians) when they came to CA and they all spoke perfect English. It was taught in their schools. My husband taught several how to fly in our flying club and no one had a problem with the language.

You got that right. I remember as bad as things were in the late 70’s you could still get a reasonable job.

Virtually every problem we face today has it’s roots in a meddling government.
