You can see the 9th Army desperately trying to break out to the west, toward the Allied lines, in what will be called the Battle of Halbe. Most will be killed or captured by the Russians, but a few will break through and join up with 12th Army, trying to go west, too.
You wonder just how many of those Red Army soldiers who survived the Battle of Berlin wound up going straight to the Gulag after the war, because they had seen too much of the West?

I attribute this as a major cause of the fall of the Soviet Union. They never stopped fighting World War 2. You can run an economy on a war footing for five years, but you can't for fifty.

Yes, it is exactly what he did. It was a brilliant plan, which capitalized on the Soviet’s inferiority complex regarding western technology. We “leaked” the results of fake tests we could not actually accomplish, and the Soviets were convinced not only that we could do that, but also that we actually could do more than that. They freaked out and tried to mass produce even more weapons they could not afford. At the same time, we sabotaged their gas pipeline project and got the Saudis to open up the oil tap and the bottom fell out of world oil prices, depriving the USSR of it’s only source of foreign money.
Reagan got them to bankrupt themselves and go out of business. But the USSR was a bad business model to begin with.
How many Red Army soldiers wound up in the Gulag? Any of the Soviet soldiers who had spent time as POWs, for sure. Any of them who mingled with Americans, for sure.
The rest just went back to the regular hell-hole gulag-like life of a New Soviet Man, who turned out to be a drunken wife beater who didn’t give a damn about his job or anything else.
Thanks for refreshing my memory. The contrast between that kind of strategic geopolitics and the current Islamo-centric model couldn’t possibly be starker. However, given my view of the imminence of the end-times (within several decades at most), I suspect we’ll be able someday to see the current malfeasance as a necessary precursor.
