A prisoner who shared a ride to jail with Freddie Gray claims the 25-year-old was trying to injure himself inside a police van before he died from unexplained spinal chord injuries, according to a leaked police report.

The report was leaked to the Washington Post under the proviso that the prisoner remains anonymous - raising questions about its accuracy and the favorable light which it shines on the Baltimore police force

Suspicious. And doesn’t change the negligence of the police, nor any overt actions they may have taken. A lot of excuses and distractions can be leaked but they do not change the fact that this guy was arrested for looking at the police and running; then thrown in a van, and is next dead. Doesn’t matter who the victim is, out-of-control police need to be held accountable for their actions or inactions.

I guess after 15 or 20 arrests, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I saw a guy try to break his own leg in jail once.

There are some real stupid pieces of trash in the world.

Not necessarily.

I have seen people attempt to stand on beds and desks to do full head dives onto floors in suicide bids.

I see this as only stirring up more anger.

Another prisoner in police custody, makes a claim he may have been trying to hurt himself. Well he may have been in distress, or having convulsions.

I disagree. If the guy was trying to win the ghetto lottery by intentionally hurting himself as the basis for a suit against the city, then the police have very little responsibility for the results.

I don’t know why the report is taking so long.

How would he sever his spine and crush his larynx though? Is that even possible by himself? But putting that all aside, why is nobody talking about the fact that this punk has been arrested multiple multiple times for drug possession/intent to distribute? I don’t know about you, but if I was insane enough to be dealing drugs and was arrested on charges of possession and intent to distribute, I would be expecting to spend the next few years in jail. But this guy has been arrested on those charges again and again and again and again and again and again and again yet there he was out walking the street and he’s only 25 years old! How is that possible? The next time this piece of garbage should have been breathing free air was when he was in his 40s at the very LEAST, but no...there he is walking about like he got a traffic ticket or something. Look at this, this is unreal............

And how many of us carry around a pocket knife, that if arrested, could be labeled as a weapon?! Was it over the legal length? This is distraction.

His history certainly seems to indicate it. He and his sister had sued over lead poisoning once and I wouldn't be surprised to find that it wasn't his only rodeo.

I agree. Self-destructive behavior is fairly commonplace following arrest. It’s the reason why defendants are stripped of anything they can harm themselves with prior to being placed in a jail cell. But, that behavior alone doesn’t necessarily absolve the police of wrongdoing.

The cops violated a written procedure to use restraints during transport.

Even in leg irons and handcuffs ? The guy should have been seatbelted in when picked off the floor.

Thought I read that it was long. Could be mistaken though. I agree with the poster that said after 20 arrests or so, it may have been the straw that broke the camels back. Think about having to deal with these thugs, and having to arrest them over and over and over again. Gotta be extremely frustrating.

Not pretty and he was not a model citizen. But, was he ever convicted? I don’t think so. Which leads to the next question, with a lengthy string of changes that did not lead apparently to a single conviction, was he being persecuted by the police? And all of this doesn’t change the fact that he was chased down and arrested without cause, was thrown in a van, and was next dead. The police need to be held accountable on all of this. Very troubling that they haven’t said much of anything and even now are taking steps to avoid explaining. Seriously, if they knew anything that could absolve the officers, it would be out already. Thus, in my opinion and until proven otherwise, they are covering for the officers.
