Wasn’t it the sinking of a ship that galvanized the US population and lead us into WW1? A common belief but the US did not enter the war for two more years after the sinking of the Lusitania.

Then there was the USS Maine, that precipitated the Spanish-American War.
Seems like a recurring theme.
