It might have made sense if Bush had followed through. But he didn’t.

I thought his plan would be to take on Iraq, capture the oil fields, secure our oil supply, and then take on the Saudis, who were the real force behind 9/11. That way, if the Saudis blew up their fields, we could soon fix them, and rely on Iraqi oil in the meantime.

The war started well, in spite of the sabotage by Turkey, but it went downhill from there, and soon became pointless. And after Bush defeated Saddam Hussein, he gave the oil away to the Chinese and the French. Great job! Bush broke the basic rule: Never start a war unless you intend to win it.

If you really think anyone in the Bush administration -- or anyone in the Beltway GOP, for that matter -- would have "taken on the Saudis," then you're delusional. The U.S. military has been functioning as an armed mercenary group for the Saudi royal family for decades.

The first military move GHWB made after Iraq invaded Kuwait was to place US forces in Saudi Arabia to block any chance that Sadddam could invade SA. One of the main rationales for GW I was to prevent Saddam from gaining control of Saudi Oil.

There has always been the odd Bush affinity for the Saudis, and there was no way either would have made any aggressive moves towards them. (And the story of how W helped many Saudis leave the US immediately after 9/11.)

I thought our presence in Afghanistan and Iraq were to prepare to liberate Iran. How sadly wrong I was.
