How the Baltimore Mayor's office explains her infamous 'space to destroy' remark
The Washington Examiner ^ | 2015-04-27 | Philip Klein

Posted on 04/27/2015 6:26:36 PM PDT by E. Pluribus Unum

With massive violence spreading in Baltimore on Monday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is under fire for a statement she made over the weekend indicating that she ordered the city's police to give people the "space" to destroy property.

"I've made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech," Rawlings-Blake said in a press conference.

"It's a very delicate balancing act, because, while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to deescalate, and that's what you saw."

How could a mayor actually say she asked police to allow people to destroy property?

According to her office, her statement didn't quite come out the way she intended it to.

"What she is saying within this statement was that there was an effort to give the peaceful demonstrators room to conduct their peaceful protests on Saturday," her office said in a statement released on Monday. "Unfortunately, as a result of providing the peaceful demonstrators with the space to share their message, that also meant that those seeking to incite violence also had the space to operate. The police sought to balance the rights of the peaceful demonstrators against the need to step in against those who were seeking to create violence. The mayor is not saying that she asked police to give space to people who sought to create violence. Any suggestion otherwise would be a misinterpretation of her statement."

The office also put out an updated version of her comments, edited in a way to reflect what the office said she really meant:

"I've made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech. It's a very delicate balancing act, because, while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also [as a result] gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to deescalate, and that's what you saw."

Space for those who want to destroy...
One more example of the mental illness of liberalism

Yes indeed. I'm hoping America finally sick enough of listening to these foul mouthed feral children to finally do something that might actually help the black community find a respectable identity and self respect.

Like cut them off from the government slop trough.

The reporter on Fox news is instigating the riot. He sounds more like Sharpton than a reporter. Poor innocent blacks just minding their own business and cops are evil.

Pray America is waking

Just wait for the lawsuits by businesses and insurance companies.

o very true. Detroit redux...

Except that currently Detroit is making a comeback and the police chief is urging citizens to carry and to defend themselves. Fighting thuggery with strong words just doesn't work.

Its ok Ms Mayor. I'm sure your government can get by without the tax revenues from the white owned businesses that were destroyed as well as those who are now going to move out of town.

Fixed it for ya.

Went through two bowls of popcorn. Like watching the neighbor’s vicious dog bite the meter maid. Great theater.

There is no city more liberal, more affirmative action and more Obama than Baltimore.

It looks like Mr. Freddie Gray was killed by someone in the Democrat led city of Baltimore. Democrats have failed. Elect more Democrats.

I couldn’t imagine how they’ll fix it at this point; even if education was fixed, what do you do with all of the people age 18 and over that have received a third-grade education and are qualified to do nothing. Have you heard the speech of some of the people they are interviewing? How could they ever fit into a modern economy?

Yeah, like the business owners are going to think to themselves, "I guess I won't file a claim because I'm not covered for riots; I'll just take it up the rear because the mayor failed to protect me after paying my taxes for police services."

There will be lawsuits. Bank on it. Gross negligence.
