On April 22, a customer at a Kroger in Little Rock, Arkansas, saw an elderly man surrounded by “seven people,” so he drew his gun and intervened to protect the gentleman.

The group surrounding the elderly man then turned their attention toward the armed customer and implored him to look the way. ” According to Fox 16, the group kept yelling, “[This] isn’t your fight, you need to walk away and you need to put the gun down.”

The armed citizen refused to comply, and instead kept his gun trained on the group as they fled the scene.

The armed citizen–who simply gave his name as “Gene”–said that he could hear a woman behind him calling 911 and when police arrived they ascertained that the elderly man was allegedly “being assaulted by his nephew” at the time that Gene intervened.

Do not pull the hammer back to threaten. Pull it back only if expect to have to shoot.

You either have the fortitude to fire or you don’t. I don’t see much benefit to racking a slide, cocking a hammer, etc. unless you actually need to put a round in the chamber. Although you will here the hammer cock, no one else will.

If you aren’t bluffing:
1. It will show in your face
2. If you aren’t bluffing, it doesn’t matter does it?

thanks. I just found the article.

Flippin cop quote:"It is tragic that someone lost their lives over tennis shoes," Phares said."

So, what would he have had to steal where it would not be tragic to lose his life ?

Mixed feelings here.

While the outcome here was good, it could have ended badly. What if Gene had to shoot? If he killed a man over a family fight?

Don’t CCW classes teach you only to draw if your life is threatened? (Or your loved ones?)

While it might be tough (or cowardly even) to walk away while an old man is beat, that might have been the best alternative.

Did the “group” fit the no-description-available description that tells all?

In many cases it's as simple as.. THEIR level of INTELLIGENCE is probably at the level of a pack of wild dogs.

America has these problems because over decades we have continually LOWERED the bar on behalf of "poliitical correctness."

You're right, for those who spoke up: When you draw, you better justify drawing by firing. You need to justify your shooting before you ever draw. My original comment was a gag.

The real answer here was that what this CCW carrier did was reckless: The man he thought that he was protecting is an idiot who didn't even want to press charges over getting his brains beat out once the police finally arrived. He was perfectly happy with being violently assaulted, it turns out.

That's exactly the kind of thing that prevents me from ever wanting to get involved in foiling some crime as a private citizen: Try to imagine that you actually choose to draw and fire to protect someone else and when the police get there the alleged victim who you thought you were trying to protect tells the police "He didn't have to shoot that poor man...", ergo, the CCW carrier in this case was a damned fool.

My weapon is for my own protection and for the protection of my party. I'm not going to do 12 years on a Manslaughter charge for protecting Mrs. Kravitz the nosey neighbor from TV's Bewitched who gets all weepy at the poor dead misbegotten urban feral youth who just moments before was beating her brains out trying to snatch her necklace.

With a striker-fired pistol, all you can do is hold it on target while you verbally issue threats.I

Not necessarily true. The slide action to chamber a round is also a pretty universal sign that you mean business.

And of course, you can always turn it sideways. And that DEFINITELY means business!

No sarc on the first line, but /sarc on the second one.

You are correct. I protect my own and other than that I am a bystander unless I can see an egregious and obvious case that needs my intervention. I won’t play policeman to chase down a shoplifter or purse-snatcher. Even if you do not use you weapon getting indicted/convicted of a crime can lose you your CHL.

How are his 'priorities out of alignment'?

This was a big city he was in, according to his tale.

Why would you presume that anyone rescued from being a victim of a crime by a stranger willing to use deadly force on their behalf would be appreciative?

Heck, try to imagine that you pull a gun on some ruffians intent on robbing some pinch-faced woman who just happens to be the president and CEO of the 'National Coalition To Ban Handguns'? Think she's going to back up your story in front of the police? Why, it was that cowboy (you) with his gun that actually *escalated* the violence, she'd be obligated to say.

Your CCW license is not license to pretend you're Spiderman. In fact, Spiderman got in all sorts of legal trouble for his deeds, usually thanks to that liberal-assed narcissist newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson that he worked for down at the Daily Bugle.

"That's exactly the kind of thing that prevents me from ever wanting to get involved in foiling some crime as a private citizen"

I was a a bar years ago where I saw a guy punch a girl in the face. I came up behind him and took control when she jumped me and started yelling for me to let him go. I got him to the door and they both left, thankfully without further commotion.

I remember being told during CCW training that if you pull your gun and don’t use it you will likely be charged with brandishing. But “Gene” may not have had enough ammo for a proper street cleaning i.e., “feral street savages”.
