Well, we agree her mistake was putting it on FB. Not sure what about not wanting my dogs to eat cat crap is illogical.

I’ve never had an issue being alpha to a dog.

I learned so much about dogs when I was surveying residential property and had to enter every single back yard, of every single house that we surveyed, and measure the fence and distances from the fence to the corners of the house, sketch the exterior, measure slabs and patios, and so on.

Every dog can be beaten, and some of them easier than others, for one thing they give up, they will try to maintain guard dog duty posturing, but in time they just fade out and go lay down. I would sometimes spend a half hour measuring the outside of a fence if I could, and constantly keeping the dog reacting to me, then if he was real tough I might sit down on the ground against his gate, and smoke a cigarette or two, and then I would just confidently open the gate and walk in when I knew that he was used up.

Another thing I that I had to learn, was that they don’t know if you really belong there or not, so your confident body language can confuse the heck out of them when they think that they are ambushing you and going to lay down the law to you.

The truth is that there is a little grain of doubt in the dog, especially in it’s owner’s own yard, after all, they know that they can’t kill every friend of his who comes out of the patio door, so if your body language and attitude is right, you can almost see the confusion in their face, about whether you are supposed to be there... or not?

After dealing with many 100s of Houston dogs and their 6 foot wooden fences, it feels like mastery over a pretty simple beast that is trying to read YOU, to figure out what HIS role is, the dirty little secret about dogs is, they don’t really know with 100% certainty, what they are supposed to do.

People see them lunging at them with their vicious snarling faces, and they think that the dog is a completely focused machine, but he isn’t, he is just a dog, with limited intelligence, and a limited attention span.

I can’t tell you how many times the homes owners came home from work while we were just finishing up, and thinking that we were just starting, tell us how fortunate we were that they came home early, because their 1 or 2 or 3, or 4 Rottweilers, or pit bulls, or dobermans, etc would never let us in that back yard.

Your post makes me feel a little better about my own change of heart years ago.

When he was still around, my old man and family had some acres west of Phoenix where we had cattle and other barnyard critters. The city people would do the "drive by and drop off" their unwanted dogs, occasionally, but especially their unwanted cats.

I guess they figured either someone would take them (usually wrong) or that the coyotes would get them (usually right), but more than a few would always end up at the farm and mix with the "who knows how many" that already lived there at any given time.

We didn't have much money, certainly not enough to take a bunch of stray cats to the vet, and so they usually suffered and died.

I've had to do some unwholesome things to keep the numbers down and never felt good about it, resented it actually, but...at the time...it seemed much less cruel to do what "I had to do" than let nature take its inhumane course, either through predation or disease or both.

These days I get very pissed at the unwitting fools who knowingly or unknowingly let their cats out at night to roam free.

And I also get more than a little upset at the cats that use my garden for a toilet and kill the wild birds at my feeders, along with the various skinks and anoles in my yard, just for fun.

Fwiw, I've had cats and I like cats and so I have, so far, good neighbor that I am, restrained myself from doing harm to any of those cats, but if a cat ends up in my dogs' fenced in yard and are slow or stupid? Well...then it's survival of the quickest. My boy doesn't like cats.

People, if you love your animals, keep them inside where they are safe.

If you let them roam, don't be surprised if they don't come home.

Everything is God’s creation. Including animals. I eat animals. I have permission to eat animals. Animals eat animals. Frequently with great cruelty.

You sir have shifted into total liberal mode:

First you say something meaningless that is intended to sound profound - “they deserve more”. That is a complete leftist tag line.

Second - you cannot win an argument on its own merits so you resort to mud slinging and character assassination. The only thing pathetic here is your logic. And please note that was not ad hominem, it was a critic of your reasoning basis.

When this story was first posted a week or two ago there was more than one person who denied that well-fed cats would kill or injure a smaller animal just for the fun of playing with it.

Why didn’t you just live trap them and take them to what was probably known as “the pound” back then instead of the fluffier term used nowadays “animal services”? You know, because someone might adopt them, even though there are thousands of cats throughout the country that are never adopted. So many cats that the no-kill and cat rescues can’t take anymore in because they’re full.

My mother-in-law is a cat person. She puts food out for the strays and I am sickened by the condition that I’ve seen some of them in. It’s certainly an unsavory job, but how can quickly dispatching them be worse than ears that are dangling, almost ripped completely off, eyes that are missing or so infected they’ll most likely die of infection, and who knows what other horrible things that happening to them. Or them just being outright killed by coyotes, cars, poisoning, etc.

Some commenting here think you have no business complaining about cat crap in your garden or elsewhere on your property. You should just ignore it. I’m not really certain why we should not be able to use our property as we like.

That is what I have heard about those breeds.

I have also heard that is why it is so difficult and dangerous to have a Wolf or a semi-breed wolf...you have to stay on top of them all the time, or they can do you real harm.

That illustrates the power you can have over a dog!

You know that post 323 about dogs?

Well, one time it was a wolf, or a wolf hybrid with yellow eyes, and it was a whole different ball game, for one thing it hid behind the gate and let me walk in without knowing it was there, I saw him in my peripheral vision and didn’t complete entering, but I had the real feeling that for the one and only time, I was being “allowed” in, like a trap.

That is an extremely creepy feeling when you know dogs and see something so uncharacteristic, and so intelligent, and almost effective.

I don’t know what he had in mind, but the whole time I was looking for him to break or change demeanor which was very focused, and serious, and quiet, and did I say quietly intense, with a single minded focus on me? He gave me the willies, I kept delaying and delaying attempting my final push, because I just kept getting the wrong signs and a bad feeling, when finally the homeowner came home, he told me how he ended up with a wolf, but I don’t remember the story.

I would not want to face a wolf pack, and I don’t just mean for the obvious reasons, but I would not want to have to see that look and demeanor, and intelligent focus
on 6 or 8 wolf faces, it is a strange feeling to be looked at by serious predators whose territory you are in and when you are being studied seriously, as prey.

The tunnel vision with which they are studying you, and the coldness of their thought process and eyes as they evaluate your position and capabilities, is unnerving.

I bet that some women and children, and weak men, submit to beasts of prey under some conditions.

So $40 bucks for a trap, a 45 minute drive (each way) with a diseased flea ridden animal so they can spend $100 to house it for a week and then destroy it. vs a arrow or a .22

Yeah you’re a conservative alright. /s You must take economics lessons from obama.

“The preferred method in dealing with FERAL cats is now TNR........Trap, Neuter and Release and is the method recommended by virtually every rescue agency and veterinary clinic throughout the country..”

Of course, and it just so happens the people making those recommendations make $$ providing that treatment.

Also ironic that the majority of those agencies making those recommendations kill thousands of animals.

They do? do you have a source for those claims or are you still just raging nonsense?

Tell us about the feral cat non-profits that do free, humane Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

Calling people “liberal” on FR is much like being called “racist” or “homophobic.” Meant to shut down discussion and declare yourself the winner.

I haven't called anyone a liberal. But I did say that they were making the kinds of shrill, emotional arguments that are typical of liberals.

It's also notable that their lack of respect for the property rights of other people is also highly typical of liberals.

Thinking about it, your being upset that someone else is (OMG!!) offended at possibly being called a liberal is kind of liberal in and of itself. Maybe you should sue me for hurting your precious feelings, princess.
