I would submit that there hasn't been room for Christians in the Democratic Party since the early 70s, at the latest. Jimmy Carter ran on his Christian faith. He carried the Evangelical vote.

Yes, because those were the days anyone could smile big, teach a Sunday School class, carry a Bible, occasionally mention "God", and could be considered a "good" Christian.
This was NOT the scenario when Carter ran the second time vs. RR and many evangelical democrats bolted the line and did not vote straight ticket. I know this to be factual on a very personal level.
