BREAKING NEWS – At least 71 people died after a powerful magnitude-7.9 earthquake shook Nepal’s capital and the densely populated Kathmandu Valley around noon Saturday, Nepal's Home Ministry says.

Sky News also reports that at least 50 people are trapped underneath rubble of the city’s iconic Dharahara Tower, one of Kathmandu’s landmarks built by Nepal’s royal rulers in the 1800s and a UNESCO-recognized historical monument.

You really got to feel for those people, rugged and hard to get to part of the world as it is.

Hard to imagine an ongoing catastrophe like this.

They have so many obstacles,it’s mountainous to begin with.....the ground isn’t solid...and it’s raining there and cold nights...now with these after shocks they’ve closed the airport which stops their aide ....not to mention roads hard to travel....it’s going to take a lot of work to help these people survive this....and these after shocks can go on for a couple months.

Right next to the Himalayas, guess they are still in the process of being pushed up and rising.

Beautiful, but deadly area.

For those who survided the quake, the night was full of anxiety as they feared more aftershocks. .....People stayed on the roads and in open areas singing songs and praying to God through the night....Children amongst us, singing songs since they are very afraid

It would appear so......

Airplanes which were going to land at the airport have returned because of all the after shocks....if they get too much rain then they’ll be facing landslides as well...what a terrible situation the rescuer teams are facing....

I was in a 7.5 in Mexico City in 1957. The death toll in the city was relatively light, no more than 200, but it was much worse toward Acapulco. At any rate there were no significant aftershocks, but I would be lying down some times and feel a faint tremor coming through the earth. This went on for weeks. After the recent Virginia 5.8 earthquake which I think was around 4 in my location, I also felt at least 3 aftershocks. One was so faint that I wouldn’t have noticed it except I had a cup of water next to where I was sitting and the surface started to quiver. Didn’t feel it otherwise, but sure enough it was announced the next day for the time I had clocked my water cups behavior. I just hope their earthquake was the big one, not a preliminary shake. Heard a scientist talking about the big Japanese quake/tsunami. He said that one was 50 TIMES stronger than this one in Nepal. I remember decades ago there was an extremely strong earthquake in Assam, a neighbor of Nepal.
