THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

Sonata for Piano and Horn in F Op. 17

In 1799 Beethoven spent most of his time working on his First Symphony and preparing a set of six string quartets for publication. This sonata was written in one day for horn player Wenzel Stich, who used the stage name Giovanni Punto.

This was the old hunting horn, pitched in E-flat, before Adolph Sachs supercharged it and gave it valves to control pitch. The horn had only a few tones available to it, and Punto was the man who came up with the technique of hand-stopping, which involved placing his hand in the bell of the horn to create tones not otherwise available. Mozart thought highly of Punto, and Beethoven learned the new capacity of the horn from this virtuoso, which carried over into his later pieces for orchestra.

Beethoven and Punto played this sonata in concert in Vienna, and the audience was so thrilled that the two men had to encore the entire piece. Then they took it on the road.

The first movement is in sonata format and sounds a lot like Mozart. The second subject is in C Major, which is expected, but sounds more like Beethoven due to the bravura piano writing. The development goes into C minor, a favorite Beethoven key, before turning to A-flat and then running through a whole host of keys. The recap works the two themes in F Major as expected. The thing to take away from this movement is that Beethoven has quickly learned what a seasoned professional can do with the once intractable horn. He draws many colors from the instrument’s capabilities.

The slow movement is in F minor, which involves a lot of hand-stopping. This movement is no more than a short introduction to the finale.

The last movement is a rondo in F Major, so you’ll be hearing that first theme a lot. Beethoven gives the horn player a chance to show off his chops in an atmosphere of fun.

This video has a few visual problems, but the two young Russian recitalists do a fine job. I’ll hand it to the Russkies. They start ‘em young and train ‘em right.

Connie: Cubismo - El Cuarto De Tula, ( Tula's Room ). [ This song is actually a knock on Cuba's Castro brothers. Cuba shuts down electrical power at night unless it is tourist oriented. Tula fell asleep and forgot to blow out the candle in her room. Her room burned to the ground. ]
