A supergroup is a music group whose members are already successful as solo artists or as part of other groups or well known in other professions. Usually used in the context of rock and pop music, the term has been applied to other musical genres such as The Three Tenors in opera.

The term is sometimes applied retrospectively when several members from a group later achieve notable success in their own right. Supergroups are sometimes formed as side projects and thus not intended to be permanent, while other times can become the primary project of the members' careers. Charity supergroups, where prominent musicians perform or record together in support of a particular cause have been common since the 1980s.

WHEN SCHUBERT TOPPED BEETHOVEN

The second movement is a beautiful song, and Billy Joel reacted to it by turning it into a doo-wop tune, “Ths Night”. This movement is in ternary format (A-B-A), and the return of the first theme is in the rhythmic underlay of the middle section.

Beethoven: Piano Sonata in C minor, Op. 13, second movement

Schubert’s slow movement is in the same key as Beethoven, A-flat, and the theme at first has little resemblance to Beethoven’s. That haunting chord change at 1:00 becomes a major feature of the movement. But he turns to the minor with Beethoven’s harmonic underlay and rhythm to bring back the first theme. The contemplative A-flat section turns dark again with the minor key section stated fortissimo and then back to a rueful major. This movement is one of Schubert’s battles between light and darkness. The final statement of the A-flat theme is heartbreaking. Schubert was one of the few who could make major key tunes sadder than minor key tunes. Note the plagal cadence at the end, a kind of resigned “Amen.”

Schubert: Piano Sonata in C minor, D. 958, second movement

Beethoven did not write a scherzo in his Opus 13, so Schubert had to one-up the late composer and write a scherzo that makes clever use of silences, something other composers, such as Tchaikovsky, would emulate but never surpass. The first theme is derived from the finale of Beethoven’s Opus 13.

Schubert: Piano Sonata in C minor, D. 958, third movement

WHEN SCHUBERT TOPPED BEETHOVEN

Beethoven’s finale is a straightforward rondo where the first subject returns and returns again.

Beethoven: Piano Sonata in C minor, Op. 13, third movement

Schubert one-ups Beethoven with a sonata-rondo movement. Frannie liked to use remote keys, and here there are two dips into B Major when he abruptly stops the action. On the surface this is a tarantella using Beethoven’s thematic material from his finale, but underneath the surface it’s a horseback ride to hell. Schubert was adept at musical descriptions of the various gaits of a horse, and this is a full tilt gallop. Note the chord change from the second movement showing up. Note the constant crossovers, which make this an extremely difficult piece. Some of the left-over-right crossovers use harmonies that would not be heard again until 70 years later with Debussy. At the end, there is a slide down the chute, and the gates of hell slam shut. Depending on how long the pianist holds the last chord, you can tell if the gates are made of wood or steel.

Schubert: Piano Sonata in C minor, D. 958, fourth movement
