When Cayla Vondal and Shi Laughlin began dating four months ago, the two juniors weren't sure if they would be able to walk down the Central High School Prom Grand March together as a same-sex couple.
Vondalwho is a lesbianand Laughlinwho is bi-sexual and identifies with the gender neutral pronoun "they"have been friends since the first day of first grade.
Neither of them had heard of a same-sex couple walking down the grand march, but when Vondal approached school administration, she was told there was no reason they couldn't.

Yes, “it” would be appropriate for either of these things.
Unfortunately, the English language lacks a third-person singular neuter pronoun, except for “one”, and apparently people don’t like to use that.
I fear that it’s too late, and the idiotic usage of “they” as a singular pronoun is established. I know the language evolves, but I don’t have to like some of the ways it does.
What an obamination.
