Ted Cruz knocks Scott Walker on immigration
Washington Examiner ^ | 4/24/2015 | Drucker

Posted on 04/24/2015 4:12:26 PM PDT by VinL

Sen. Ted Cruz on Friday took a shot at rival presidential contender Scott Walker for comments the Wisconsin governor has made regarding immigration policy.

Cruz opposes comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for the estimated 11-12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. But the Texan is a big proponent of legal immigration and making adjustments to U.S. law that would facilitate more legal immigration. He criticized Walker for suggesting that he supported limiting legal immigration if it has a negative impact on the wages of American workers.

"There is considerable bipartisan agreement outside of Washington that we need to improve and streamline legal immigration so that we can remain a nation that welcomes and celebrates legal immigrants," Cruz said in an interview with the Washington Examiner during a brief campaign swing through Las Vegas.after cost estimates came in higher than anticipated.

I think it is a mistake for any politician to on the one hand embrace amnesty, embrace a pathway to citizenship for those who are here illegally, and on the other hand seek to restrict or punish legal immigrants," Cruz continued. "I am the son of an immigrant who came legally from Cuba. [President Ronald] Reagan referred to legal immigrants as Americans by choice and there is no stronger advocate of legal immigration in the U.S. Senate than I am."

"I think the right approach is to secure the border, follow the rule of law and embrace and improve legal immigration," Cruz said.

Walker has conceded a change of heart on immigration policy as he gears up to launch a 2016 presidential bid. The governor, 47, previously supported a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants. Now he is opposed. Supporting a pathway to legalization or citizenship could be problematic for a Republican candidate seeking his party's White House nomination.

But in a recent interview with conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, Walker appeared to move farther to the right on immigration than even amnesty hawks like Cruz. Here's what Walker said, as reported by Breitbart. (read more)

From same link:

Here's what Walker said, as reported by Breitbart.
“In terms of legal immigration, how we need to approach that going forward is saying — the next president and the next congress need to make decisions about a legal immigration system that's based on, first and foremost, on protecting American workers and American wages, because the more I've talked to folks, I've talked to Sen. [Jeff] Sessions [R-Ala.] and others out there — but it is a fundamentally lost issue by many in elected positions today — is what is this doing for American workers looking for jobs, what is this doing to wages, and we need to have that be at the forefront of our discussion going forward.”

UPDATE: The Cruz campaign is pushing back against the headline of this story. National spokesman Rick Tyler offered this in response: “The headline to this story is ridiculous and in no way matches what Senator Cruz actually said. The Senator was discussing his own views on immigration and had nothing to do with Governor Walker.”

Good, Walker is good for Wisconsin, so why is there a need to lie about Cruz
if Walker is the new Messiah of Conservatives? I don't see the lying, misquotes,
and misdirection coming from Cruz supporters. We're looking at each candidate hard.

And yes, the new litmus test as being a Governor this time around is laughable.
Walker vs Cruz in a debate should be interesting. But I doubt Walker can
make it that far.

Ok, lets do this all over again. You tell me a Quote from Cruz on his immigration stance.

Key word here is Quote. And lets not confuse immigration with H1B anymore.

I’m sorry it took so long to get back to you today Finny. Grandkids here. The thread is probably long over but I wanted to make sure I answered you.

“It would have prevented my skilled grandfather to immigrate here from Scotland in the early 1900”

Things are much much different here than they were back then. Back when you skilled grandfather immigrated he made a stop on Ellis Island first. Immigrants were screened for various things including illnesses. This is no longer the case. We have genuine health issues now in this country with diseases that we thought were irradicated here now re-appearing along with new ones. We made sure that the immigrant had a skill and someone to sponsor them here. I know of a muslim visitor, educated in this country from Pakistan who has come here specially so his wife could give birth. Did we give citizenship like that back then?

Our immigration policies have never been so free and loose in our history. This is not what was intended. In the beginning we were trying to settle a large area, working our way west, building big railroads. Immigration was encouraged in the early years and after the civil war the states started to pass their own immigration laws.

In our past history immigration has been limited to certain countries, certain occupations, political persuasions etc. to manage to makeup of the country. The feds did not take over immigration until 1875.Immigration laws were even passed to address economic concerns.

Never have I read that immigration policy in the US was based on an emotional issues. It was always (in the past anyway) based on what the country needed and what was best for the US. Now all of a sudden it seems that policy has changed and it hasn’t been good for the country. Now is seems immigration is a social issue akin to gay marriage.

Do an internet search “Immigration History in the United States” and you’ll get some good information. I don’t know of any country who has a more open immigration policy than we do or a more foolish one I should say.

I would say to people who want to let in every tortured soul into this country regardless of how it helps or hurts our own citizens then they should sponsor an immigrant themselves because personally, I am sick to death of doing so.

In answer to your question about what industry the unemployed people I know worked in, one worked for a phone company and the others in manufacturing. In the small town I lived in there were a couple of large industries that hired mainly Mexican immigrants. The company provided housing for them and I would see them at the bank on payday cashing their checks and sending money home. These people have displaced American workers. My husband lost a part-time teaching job to an immigrant who cannot speak English.

The farms in WI employ large number of immigrants, many undocumented. 40% of WI farm workers are immigrants. The canning industry also uses cheap Mexican labor and provides housing for them while they are here during the harvesting season.

Most of the people who lost their jobs were middle aged and it is difficult to find a job in a bad economy when you are that age. One of them found another job after going to school and switching professions.

What I am proposing at this time is nothing different than what our country has done in the past. It’s the open policy that we have now that is new.

The words written on the Statue of Liberty are not our words. They were not put there at the request of the US citizens and they do not nor ever have defined our immigration policy until recently. They are pretty sounding feel good words but if turned into a formal immigration policy is suicide for a country. Most other countries know that and have much stricter immigration law.

I've read it.

Disclosure: The wife of the author works as an adviser to Scott Walker.
PRICELESS!

Author Quote:
But the Texan is a big proponent of legal immigration
and making adjustments to U.S. law that would facilitate
more legal immigration.

What was said by Cruz's quote:
that we need to improve and streamline legal immigration
so that we can remain a nation that welcomes and
celebrates legal immigrants

Does not match the Authors "mis"quote.

Now, please tell me what you think it means without placing words in Cruz's mouth
like the Author did. Oh, and the Author LIED about Cruz in the headline. If you
go around saying or even implying that Walker wants to stop all Legal immigration
you are doing him no favors, and he will dry up like a prune in Vegas.

“Nonsense.”

Is that your well-researched one word response? The facts are the facts. Which fact to you take issue with? Let me know and I’ll look it up again to make sure I read it right.

The personal stories are my own experiences. They are what they are.

Nobody running opposes Amnesty....they can't... that ball is beyond anyone stopping.....the border issue will be “controlled” in order to allow for ease of access to any and all who come to work in the states.

Immigration and redistribution of people as a commodity is in full swing which is why they no longer use the term assimilation rather integration.... The most any Politician can do is have a plan how the influx of those here will be "integrated" into the country, and those plans will likely differ be it special accomodations or HIB or whatever........it's happening here and in Europe with any persons crossing borders or illegally in a country.

I don't expect anything from Cruz except to abide by the laws currently established..and act on the ones that he's determined to act on....one of which is if they're criminals they leave.

Fast-tracking Legal Immigration isn't in any way increasing legal immigration.

You don’t know Cruz wants to "expand" and fast track legal

Expand? Where did Cruz say that? Oh that's right, another LIE against Cruz
to support Walker. You are doing Walker no favors.

The GOP and DNC are betting that no future President will have the bravery
to enforce immigration law. This is why Obama is ignoring the law and flying
as many possible Dem voters here that he can. And the GOP is supporting this.

Americans are trapped by the Feds open destruction of our Country.
I wonder how many have no idea this is even happening, or refuse
to believe it because it's so extreme.

You’re talking about both legal and illegal immigration. They’re not the same thing.

The only reason legal immigration is suddenly an issue is because the establishment and paid trolls on this website are terrified that Cruz will win fight for our Constitution from the Oval Office.
