You can reduce “gun violence” by disarming the people. The problem is that disarming good people leads to an increase in overall violence.

A mob with tire irons and baseball bats is more than a match for one unarmed man, regardless of his physical fitness, particularly when the mob gets to choose the victim and the timing of the attack.
