We deserve neither credit nor blame for our ancestors

I HATE HIM, but he was right in that regard.

Sometimes the stupidity is so thick, it is hard to realize that it is real.

There is probably not a person on the planet that does not have ancestors that both owned slaves and were slaves.

Slavery was a common institution in nearly all societies for many thousands of years. when the Europeans came to the Americas, slavery was already long established. Slavery was common in Africa, in Asia, in Europe, and in North and South America. I do not recall it being mentioned in Australia, specifically, but women were virtual slaves there before the Europeans came.

It is hard to keep male slaves when you are a nomadic hunter-gatherer society. Enemies that are vanquished are simply killed.

What an idiot notion...that having a slave-owning ancestor somehow taints the entire extended family. My own family has roots in both "North" and "South" (dad from upstate New York and mom from central Louisiana). Dad's family came over and stole land in Massachusetts from the Indians in 1630. Mom's family landed in Georgia about the same era (probably "unwilling" immigrants....i.e. transportees).

I found out a few years ago that my Yankee relatives had bought and owned some of the very first black slaves sold in the US. To the best of my knowledge, mom's side were all small farmers and never owned slaves (but they did fight for the South in the Civil War).

But what matters is what "I" do....not what remote ancestors did more than three centuries ago.
