Ringo Starr, Green Day Among Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
NBC ^ | 4-19-15 | AP story

Forever a Beatle, Starr will enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist on Saturday, inducted along with an eclectic class of musicians.

Starr, who was previously enshrined with the Beatles in 1988, will be honored along with pop punks Green Day, soul singer-songwriter Bill Withers, underground-rock icon Lou Reed, bluesy guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and The "5" Royales.

When the Beatles split at the height of their fame, Starr decided to take a shot at being a frontman and surprisingly flourished with a string of radio hits, including "It Don't Come Easy," "Photograph" and "You're Sixteen," singles that earned him new-found respect and popularity.

He wasn't the artistic one, but Starr was the first of the "Fab Four" to have commercial success upon going solo.

Starr will be inducted by McCartney, who pushed for the drummer's enshrinement after learning Starr was the lone Beatle not to be honored for his individual music.

Popularity born of nostalgia. Respect? Not so much. Well, Nancy Sinatra level respect, perhaps.

Let’s face it, Ringo is only in because the other three Beatles are, not because of his own merits.

Surprised that Lou Reed wasn’t already in.

I know what you mean and especially when you have legendary bands like Deep Purple and the Moody Blues still not in, but if memory serves you have rap groups like Run DMC and pop singers like Madonna in there. What the hell?

Kudos to Joan Jett for her success. I’ve read that after the Beatles break-up that Ringo turned into an alcoholic because of depression. That’s understandable, I guess. But he fought through it and became successful on his own. So, good on him as well.

Ringo considered by drummers, to be a very good drummer.

Ringo’s been clean and sober for many, many years along with his lovely wife, too.

At the time of his death, Stevie Ray had been clean and sober for a few years, too.

My BIL is one of the finest SRV tribute performers in the country, and was invited by Jimmy Vaughan to visit Cleveland to perform there this week.

Good news about Paul Butterfield, ahead of their time in ‘65.
He died young, heart attack at 44.

Don’t get me wrong, Ringo is probably my favorite Beatle as a person, and he was no slouch on the drums, but I just don’t think his solo career which mainly consisted of covering others’ songs is worth of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

If the baseball HOF had the same entrance requirements as the R R HOF, any ,250 hitter with 100 career HR’s would be in.

SRV absolutely should be in, David Bowie should thank his lucky stars he found in and gave Bowie the boost in his career when Let’s Dance came out.
