Already doing this in Orange County....the water doesn’t go directly to tap water though.
The sewage is processed and purified, then pumped down into the local aquifer.
Don’t be squeamish about it....the water is so clean after the process, that they have to re-mineralize it before pumping it down....otherwise it would leach chemicals out of the concrete piping system and destroy it.

It would make more sense to route the gray water to the toilet tank. Drains from the sinks are dirty, but generally do not contain any sewage, and would be ok to flush the toilets.
